Question about brake pads
First, thanks to OP for an awesome write up on the TBU. I'm just getting ready to do the upgrade on my 1998 4runner, so I'm trying to narrow down parts. I came across these brake pads:
2006 Toyota Sequoia Trd performance brake pads. Stopping - PTR0989110 | Toyota, Gladstone OR
It says they fit 2003-2007 Sequoia but not a Tundra. Am I missing something? Aren't they both 13WL Calipers? Also, are the "TRD performance pads" worth the increased cost? Thanks for the help!

That's a solid price for that kit. I've not seen that one before but those are indeed the rotors and calipers you want. P.S. you can send your old 4Runner calipers back as cores... I might have done that with my Rockauto calipers...
The pads are so-so since they are chamfered but not terribly by any means. It's the thicker rotors that help the most.
I forgot they are also a forum sponsor on here. Use this code to save 5%: 7E140484FE8C43. Now they are only $193!

so I have the 2001 "flower" 5 spoke wheel. Im to solve the issue of the stock spare not fitting with the large 13WL brake caliper Im thinking of ordering a used additional flower wheel from ebay. Wondering if I can hang it in the same spot with the current spare hangs under the car?

I have a set of calipers and rotors from a 2006 Lexus GX 470.
The stamp on the calipers is 13WH. Is this set up going to fit a 99 $Runner?
I don't think it will, but i got them for free.

Not sure on your line of questions. I’ve not seen a steel 16” spare not fit, so thinking you may have the 15” wheels??
Not positive on the “flower” wheel but assume it’s the one that came on Tacoma’s, Sequioa’s, ect. 16”?
Yes that wheel, and I assume all others, will fit under on the spare carrier.
265/75R16 is about the largest tire that will fit.

I've never heard of someone doing that swap. You could always pull the existing calipers and rotors and comparing.

In any event, if you want more stopping power, your not towing anything, and you have a RWD 4Runner like I have that weighs less than the 4WD then I would think the 199's would be fine. In my case I'm not sure how much extra stopping power I'm going to get with the 231's over the 199's. I mean 4mm doesn't seem like much. Like I said I think the main benefit of the 231's over the 199's is the bigger rotor not so much the caliper especially given your observation re the pads.

The 16 inch 3 spoke wont fit the 231, but what i want to know is if it will fit with a spacer. I cant seem to find any info on this wheel with 231 and spacer combo.

Anybody have a pic of the 231 or 199 calipers vs the OEM Sport calipers? I forgot Sports had bigger ones and had major rubbing on my new wheels when I installed them, despite seeing people saying they'd work (must've had base models). Curious how much I'll need to space out if/when I upgrade - I REALLY enjoy how much backspacing I have right now and would like to keep going out further to a minimum, but I'm gonna be due for brakes very soon anyways and figured might as well upgrade, especially with running extra weight+steelies

After adding the 231 mm brake setup did any of you need to replace your master brake cylinder? The brake pedal seems a little softer than stock.

Here is something i found digging about the same issue about soft pedal feel, maybe this will shed some light for you.

Your brake system is a hydraulic lever. The master cylinder has a 1" diameter piston and the effective area of the calipers and wheel cylinders it much greater, approximately 20:1 This is analogous to mechanical leverage (pull on a 1" wrench vs. a 20" long wrench).
The hydraulics don't care how big the caliper or the rotors are, only the size of the pistons. 4Runners with 15" wheels had calipers with 43mm pistons (S12xx casting) but 16" wheelers had 45mm pistons (S13xx casting). The 199mm and 231mm Tundra calipers both has the 45mm pistons. So if you upgrade from an S13xx to another S13xx casting caliper your hydraulic advantage has not changed.
I'll spare you the math, but I found that going from S12 to S13 calipers and from 15/16" to 1" wheel cylinders increases the hydraulic leverage by 10%. I found, even after thorough bleeding, that the pedal is softer. Not spongy, but just that it takes less force to actuate the brakes. This is why, the lever is 10% longer.

Turns out that article is right on point. It is softer but stops much better. Just took time to get used to

Makes sense and could possibly put most the soft pedal feel questions to rest!
