Running Board Q's

hey mates...

recently during one of the wheeling trip, my running boards took a hit from the dam rocks..

needless to say, one side is bend..

however, I found an 01 sports runner running boards and thinking about swapping it out..

when I took it home, I notice the front end piece is not the same as mine.. but I'm thinking about just using the boards and swap the front piece of mine to the 01's..

has any one tried this before?

also, I'm thinking about re-coating it with some plastic dip to add a little shine to it..

what do you guys think?

thanks.

Trust me I found out the hard way that running boards are not all equal (just ask LimitedBob). Limiteds and Sports use the same running board with the exact same mounts but not the same end pieces (front or back). A limited has a much wider, and lower, fender flare while a sport has a slightly narrower and shortened flare.

Essentially a limited running board will not match up with a sport fender flare (the end pieces are not tall enough). However, I have noticed that it is possible to remove the end pieces, so if you still have your orginial running board end piece(s)(you need to match your style of flares), then yes you could switch them out and they should work.

Here's a pic of what happened when I tried to put a set of limited running boards on my sport. Notice the gap between the top of the running board end piece and the bottom of my flare.

Luckily, I only spend $40 for both sides.

On my rig, I only have the little chrome piece.

The front and end piece of the 01 are hold up by like 4 bolts. I think is either an 6mm or 7mm and the other two are like 12 mm.

I need to play with it some more next weekend. Wish this weekend didn't go by so fast.

I see that, if the running board doesn't fit well, I might go for an pair of sliders. But it was just hard, I came out and saw the bend, I wad a little upset to be honest.

I would recommend jumping into sliders, you've already seen what can happen when the running boards get in over their heads. And you'll have the piece of mind that you have some armor on the most vulnerable part of your rig! You're fortunate that they didn't get up into the bottom/side of your truck when you hit the rock and caused much worse damage.

yeah but with the choices I looked at... most of them are welded on..

the ones off of the top of my heads that aren't welded on are the shrockworks and they are behind.. I don't know if I should wait the 2 months out or what...

on the other hand, have any one painted the running boards with plastic dip?

What do you not like about them being welded on?
Except for the extra expense.

I am sort of in the same boat. I like the looks of the Westin tube steps, but would like something that actually has form as well as function. I do not want a permanent welded slider for both the welding expense, potential resale value hit, and possibly inviting frame rust.
I don't really like the thinner diameter tubing on most sliders.
If someone made a bolt on 3" tube slider with step pads, for less than $250 well I'd be interested.

I understand the extra expense part, but I fail to see any "potential resale value hit" if anything just the opposite, a nice pair of sliders properly done look way better and add both form and function and strength to any 4Runner.
Also properly installed and painted should have no more frame rust possibilities than stock.

As far as looks of the smaller dia tubing that is of course personal preference and it is what it is, myself I prefer the smaller dia tubing look but to each his own when it comes to looks.

But from what I have seen those bolt on "Nerf Bars" made of stainless with steps are most all about the the $250 range some less.

Hi folks,

If I understand you all's experience with the SR5 and the LTD running boards, if I buy the 2005 factory SR5 board from a parts recycler, I can take of my old, screwed up LTD board - the part that's between the two lights - and put the new, recycled board, minus the unlighted SR5 end-caps, in the place of mine and it will look and work like it's supposed to.

If I do this, I'll have a lighted running board, because my old end-caps work great, and the new board that is in good shape will be between my lighted end caps. Then I give somebody the SR5 end caps, unless I can get the recycler to keep them and charge me less. That would be nice.

Did I read you right? I'm about to order this, and was searching the board to make sure I was ordering the right piece.

Gayle

maybe gayle but this question would be better asked here
4th Gen T4Rs - Toyota 4Runner Forum

this part of the forum is for 3rd generation 4runners meaning 2002 and down
since you have a 2005 most of us here haven't played around with enough later model ones to know if swapping end caps on a 4th gen running board would work, i mean a few may know here, but you have a much much better chance asking the question in the proper forum.

that said thanks for using the search function, and you can narrow down your search by picking 4th gen only in the drop down box.
good luck!
