clunk when taking foot off accelerator
Hi all. I am looking for some knowledge here. I have a 99 4runner with about 170000km on it. Recently it has started making a "clunking" noise when I take my foot off the accelerator when driving at about 60km/hr and faster. Any ideas about what might be happening????

u-joint(s) may be toast. same thing happened to mine. check for play on them underneath the truck especially if you haven't greased them up in a while.

+1 on greasing the U joint(s).You may want to take a look at the level of the transmission fluid. Change it if necessary.

Put your foot on the brake and put your 4runner in drive, then reverse, then drive again (assuming you have an automatic.) Listen for similar clunk. As mentioned, might be UJoint slack. Just replaced mine due to vibration.

More than likely, it's the skip yoke on the rear driveshaft.... They trend to get sloppy and un greased... Causing a binding/ clunking... See it all the time at the shop. Let us know. Usually a bad u- joint will give you more of a noise or a vibration...

Is it a loud heavy clunk or more like a "wrench on the driveshaft" sounding lighter clunk?
