I think im having transmission problems
Ok, I just got a 97' and when i turn it on and put it into reverse or drive sometimes it pops when I the gas. When i say pops I mean the it shakes the whole car. Also when i back up out of a parking spot and put it into drive, I hit the gas and all it does is rev it up like its in park or neutral and it did that twice today. Can you tell me if this is normal and a known problem or should i take it to a mechanic ASAP. Please help me with this cause I dont want to replace a 4WD transmission.

I had the same exact problem, turned out the rear brake shoes were sticking. Take it to a brake shop, have them open the drums, clean things out inside if necessary, and re-adjust the rear brakes.

Squeaking is probably your fronts. You may need new pads/shoes all around.

Didn't need new shoes, but replaced them anyway. I had contamination inside the rear drums and the brakes had been improperly adjusted by someone (not me, I swear). As soon as the Toyo tech got everything cleaned out and adjusted, the popping went away.
I was envisioning all kinds of transmission problems and was even going to change out my transfer case just in case that was the problem.

Ha, me neither, I thought I had fubar'd my Tundra brake upgrade too, so I replaced them with rebuilt set before I figured out it was the rears.
If you take your 4Runner onto some gravel and have some buddies outside, I bet they'll see one of the rear wheels dragging and the other spinning while you try to move forward.
