It might have had manual hubs, I don't remember. I still don't think it would do anything just driving it for 30 seconds around the block, but I'll concede that there's a small chance the bearings could get damaged or pressed out a little. I wouldn't worry about it myself, but the OP can now at least be warned.

I guess you could always re-use the thrust washers and throw a big nut and bolt through the holes to hold the hubs together while you drive with the CVs out. Personally though, I wouldn't care if it's a CV so I wouldn't even bother checking them. Sooner or later, mine will break on the trail anyways and new ones will go in.

If the noise is still there when the diff is locked but in 2hi, You should chk the the diff to see if it unlocks. Lift up the drivers side and spin the tire. Nothing else should spin (the front drive shaft or the passenger side Half shaft.

If you can't remove the axle, how does a 2wd 4Runner work? Isn't it the same upright and hub with caps sealing the bearings? I don't recall seeing a bolt through a 2wd hub? I agree you shouldn't drive without them because you can contaminate the front differential, but I didn't think you could severely damage the spindle and bearing. I'm just curious, I don't intend to start a war on Toyota's hub design.

Sorry if this derails this thread........... Any response can be sent via PM. Thanks.

2wd 4runners use the same knuckle and bearing but everything else is different. The Hubs of 2wd 4runners are held on with a giant nut on the back side. It is torqued to 215 foot pounds and then staked.

There is no war over Toyota's hub design. Almost all car manufacturers use a big nut and outer CV joint to hold the hub bearings together.

Here's a picture of a 2WD spindle. Is the nut behind the large cover on the back? It doesn't seem like there's enough room. I was always under the assumption the bearing was pressed into the upright and the hub was pressed into the bearing held in with a large snap-ring. I've been wrong before though.....
