I have done a little research, but all I could find was about going the other way, i.e. dropping a manual transmission into a limited or 01-02.
Based on what I have read, the transfer case should bolt right on, but it's a bit longer so you would have to change drive lines too. There were also some electrical issues I think, but I just don't know enough about the electrical stuff to really comprehend. Again, these were the issues of putting a manual into a runner that already has the multimode. I'm trying to go the other way - put a multimode into a 5 spd.
I think it's primarily cost prohibitive and very complex since you need all the AWD sensors and related hardware at each wheel plus the electrical is generally a nightmare.
I've never seen it done or heard of it being done and being on several Toyota forums I think I'd seen it by now.
I think it would be easier and much better to put in a lefty instead.
But if you really want multimode, it will be a wiring nightmare if you dont know what you are doing because you will have to integrate a Multimode computer in to the original wiring. If you do know what your doing it will probably be a pain in the ass at best.
I have thought about integrating a switch into mine for the ADD to engage and disengage when I wanted it too. It would act like an electronic twin stick. But mehh probably not worth the added effort.
Do you still have the links for those thread about 5-speed into an 01-02?
I am not interested in doing it myself, but I do want to see how these guys went about doing it.

All I could find was theoretical stuff. Nothin really like a write up. They were on yotatech. Just googled "multimode into manual swap" or something close to that and it was like the first link.
