2002 SR5 or 1997 Limited Build? Help

Ok here's the deal... I need opinions on which 4runner to build into a wheeler.
Here are the options.
2002 4runner SR5 - 120K miles, diff lock, 2.5" daystar spacers w/bilstein shocks.
The spacer lift and shocks can be switched to the 1997 if I decide to build the 2002. If I build the 2002 I would be more cautious on the type of build vs. the 1997 which I would be willing to do whatever to it. (I only paid 3800 for it)
1997 4runner Limited - 250K miles, diff lock. Bone Stock.
So what is everybody's opinion on building up a 250k mile 4runner. The 4r was well taken care of by an old man and it has no leaks or rust. Dealer has all service records. Its in very good shape but the odometer does say 250K.
Votes please: 1997 4runner or 2002 4runner

Go for the 1997. Since you own both, I would go with the 97 because you won't care as much if it gets beat up and I'm assuming you won't DD the build 4runner. Plus the 97 has a rear diff lock, as the 02 has a center diff lock (no advantage off-road, compared to a major advantage with the rear diff lock).

You will also want to ditch the spacers if you are trying to build a wheeler. Get some coilovers and OME or LC coils for the back. The mileage shouldn't be an issue because you wouldn't be driving it all the time.

Yeah I dont think 02's came with the rear diff lock but I could be wrong.

I would go with the 97 as well. It makes more sense to me..

x2 ^^. 02's had the center diff lock instead, which is useless for an offroad rig. Even if the 02 had a rear diff lock, I would still say build the 97.

My reason for this is the transfer case shifter. The 02's use a pushbutton that can be finicky at best. I would much prefer a manual shifter for a dedicated offroad rig.

I didn't know that the 02 diff lock was different. Thats a pretty huge piece of info I didn't know.

By looking at both 4r; they both have the same manual transfer case shifter. They have the stick with the side AWD push button option on the side. Is that what you're refering to?

Oh the 97 is a limited, didnt see that. They both have a push button then, but the 97 has a rear diff lock and the 02 has an unlockable center diff.

1997 it is! rear diff lock is important in off roading. Thanks for that small foresight. I am planning OME - rear 891's and TOYTEC - front coils. Any objections? I plan on adding front bumper w/ winch, rock sliders and rear bumper.
