2001 Auto Transmission - Noise and will not go into gear - Help

My sons 2001 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4X4 would not go into Drive or Reverse. He started the 4Runner yesterday (I was in the yard), and when he placed it into Drive, I just heard a rattling/grinding sound. He placed the shifter back into park easily. We placed the shifter into Drive and Reverse easily, although the transmission di not engage. I noticed the check engine light was on as well. His 4Runner has 125,000 miles and is in good shape, although we bough it used about 5 months ago. Someone told me I need to check the antifreeze overflow for red transmission fluid - I did notice it was a redish color. ANY ADVICE WILL BE APPRECIATED - I'M NOT GREAT UNDER THE HOOD BUT I CAN DO GENERAL MAINTENANCE STUFF. SOUNDS LIKE A TRIP TO AAMCO OR THE DEALERSHIP?

Checking the overflow for signs of the dreaded pink milkshake is a good idea.

The coolant is red in color too, so that's ok. You are checking for a pink foam that occurs when the transmission fluid and coolant mix due to a corroded seal in the radiator.

Make sure the transfer case shifter did not get knocked into neutral. Also check the transmission fluid to make sure it has the right amount in there. When you check it you will see if it looks pinkish, milky which would be bad. Should be a clear red. Get the code read to find out what the check engine light is all about. You can buy a cheap code reader or take it to an Autozone. They may read it for you.

Thanks for the clarification. There's no foam, and the transmission fluid level is fine. This sounds bad doesn't it? With two in college this is the last thing I was expecting from a 3rd gen 4Runner with only 125K...

Thanks for the advice. I'm heading to work now - I'll check the transfer case and codes. Thanks again.

Cool, a cheap and easy fix. As long as the stealership and aamco didn't make a penney off you I'm happy!

Now read up on the pink/strawberry milkshake so that doesn't really happen to you.

Yes, I suggest replaceing the radiator as preventive mainataice. I put a koyo A1998 in mine and recommend any third gen owner do the same.

Glad this was a easy "fix" for you! It's an easy mistake to make. Good call kball!
