HELP! Running boards

Hey I sold my running boards this weekend to a guy with a silver sr5 99 4runner. He calls me and says that they won't fit. I thought that 3rd gen running boards were universal am I wrong? These running boards came off of my 98 sr5 4runner. Here is what they look like
