Wiring FJ Cruiser switch to High Beam Circuit
Hey everyone, I have 4 6in KC Driving lights mounted on my Defiant Light Bar, and had them wired independent of any headlight circuit.
Well, a few days ago I was driving out to the lake and was pulled over by a sheriff that saw me switch them off after I had switched down to my low beams. He told me that aux lights (with the exception of fog lights) have to be wired to shut off with the high beams. He gave me a warning and told me to fix it.
After looking through the wiring diagrams I discovered that the Headlights in our 4Runners operate on a Ground Switch, while the relay controlling the KC's requires a +12V. I came up with a solution that I think worked out well.
Here was my criteria:
1. I didn't want to alter the KC Relay
2. I didn't want to run and more wires through the firewall
3. The KC's must only turn on when the high beams are on
4. The KC's must turn off with the key in the OFF position
5. The "Lights On" light must glow when the switch is on whether the lights are actually on or off.
Supplies required were:
2 12V relays
14G stranded wire (you could get away with smaller wire, but I had extra)
spade and butt connectors
electrical tape or heat shrink
I wired everything exactly as I drew up below, and it works exactly like I wanted it to. This may not be the easiest possible solution, but it worked excellent for me. Let me know if you have any questions!
