I ended up mounting the ballasts on the backside of the sheet metal lip right behind the headlights... worked out perfectly.

Did any of you use the extra rubber grommets the came with the 9006 (fog light) bulbs? I was aiming the lights the other night and noticed that there was a little bit of light coming from where the bulbs mount to the housing.

I'm talking about the DDM Tuning kit... the 9006 bulbs had a little baggie with two rubber grommets.

I am new to this and I have a 2002 4 Runner. Can't basically see anything in the dark with the stock lights. Wife agreed for HID. Googling around found this thread. I have read all the 9 pages but I have few questions if anyone is willing to help me out

1) DDM tuning.. Looked at the site, cannot find the right part for my version. I am a noob at car stuff and someone else will be installing it for me .

2) kbCarstuff .. Has two versions and I can't find the difference between the two..
a) H4 Volt HID Digital+ HID Kits
b) H4 Xtreme Digital HID Conversion Kits

3) What are the lifespans of the bulbs? Can I buy the bulbs locally like at Autozone?

4) I like blue tint to the headlight, so 5000K or 6500K ?

Thank you for any help that you can provide.

We are more than willing to help but you may find more related info from 3rd gen members by starting a thread in that forum as you have a 2002 3rd generation 4Runner.

Kbcarstuff has the Xtreme and Volt - I don't recall why the Xtreme Digital was "better" (I remember something about better bulbs and components made by Phillips). I run this one in 5000K and like it tremendously with significant increase in light output over the stock halogen bulbs. I am running an 07 with projector housing so different system.

DDM is the cost friendly kit that has mixed reviews....

5000K IMO is blu-ish enough to consider blue tint. Again, my opinion, but how BLUE are you wanting this? You can see side by side across the full kelvin rating by googling HID Color chart and checking thru the images.

Something to consider is not all kits are apples to apples when comparing kelvin rating. You'll have to search more about which ones run bluer etc.

You say you can barely see at night - do you have oxidation or fading on your headlamps?

I have never seen HID kits or components for sale in generic auto part stores. They only inventory Halogen bulbs from what I've seen ie Oreillys Autozone Napa.

Thank you for the reply. I will post it there as well..

Headlights are on, but comparing to other year models of 4 runner bulb is not bright enough at night for me. Hope that makes sense. Went to autozone and got the highest bulb I can get and still not help.

Have a 2014 Sienna for example and that is fine. Had a lexus IS300 and that was bright too.

I will probably go for the 6000K ..

This thread definitely sold me on the HID idea. Probably going to get the DDM Ultra D1s Kit. Trying to decide between 4500k and 5500k...

thanks for all the info!

I've also been doing some reading about how legal some of these kits might be. Does anyone know if these are for sure legal in an 06 sport? or if you've had any issues...

DDM Kit installed on my rig...no issues, didn't change the projectors to specific HID from Halogen but they look perfect and have no wild stray light patterns to on-coming traffic...they look like a Lexus headlight (Upgraded to 06 face-lift headlights from 05)...no issues and superior lighting! I mounted the ballasts with zip-ties to reservoirs int he engine bay...the less they vibrate, the longer they will last....

Most certainly not legal as the headlights were not designed for them. With that said I have been putting HIDs into cars since 2006 without any issues with law enforcement or state inspection.

Most PnP HID kits will have some sort of small print that say for "offroad use only" to cover their behinds. Are they DOT legal in unintended housings? No, but I have yet to hear someone fail inspection with them.

I was one of those kids in the early HID days that ran them in everything and blinded oncoming traffic. It wasn't until I got my Acura with OEM HID and projectors that I realized what a proper housing and HID cutoff should be.

If you do notice that you are getting flashed by other drivers in 06+ housings, I suggest you search the forum for the "squirrel finder" mod. I was getting flashed by oncoming traffic on the rural MN/WI highways but the mod helped with the glare.

Thanks for the input, and good suggestion for the mounting!

Do I need to get anything else beyond this kit to hook up to my 06 sport? I was looking for something that would mention h11 adapter, so i'm feeling just a little lost..

Your link is to the D1s bulbs. You need to go these if you like the Ultra kits.

Personally, I think the 35w is enough. 55w is overkill.
4500k color (temp) is about the closest to natural white.
