It means that coolant is leaking into your crankcase somehow. It won't necessarily affect driving performance. The risk is that it thins out your oil and you spin a rod bearing because they're not lubricated well enough. Essentially destroying your engine as that will send metal shavings throughout the block.

thanks for the outlook on it. when i take it back to the shop (i don't blame them for their dismissal of the problem. maybe i didn't explain it well to them) what kind of tests should they be doing it to it? i know a few things about mechanics and the workings of a combustion engine, but the cooling system to me is a bit of a mystery (i work a bit on air-cooled motos).

Honestly, coolant in the oil is the test. The headgasket should be keeping everything separate so there should be no way for coolant to get into your oil unless you pour some into it.

I finally replaced transfer case actuator seals. It's mostly a strait forward job per the excellent write-ups here on the forum. The two bolts up top are a bit annoying to get to but after fiddling with various extensions and swivels I found that they can be reached with strait extensions of the appropriate length.

Yes the ones on rock auto. I assumed SS because it said ST316 so I thought 316 stainless but your right, it’s actually satin coat steel or “Galvanneal”. I’ll make sure to topcoat a little more thoroughly with rust preventive.

when i got home from the trip, took it to an independent toyota shop and talked to the dude there. he didn't seem too concerned about it, as the truck is not throwing any codes, doesn't puff white on cold starts, and doesn't have a hard stumble. now, i have noticed some stumbles on cold starts, but it's more like a hiccup than anything. feeling a bit conflicted about the whole situation.
when i got the truck, i switched to mobil1 synthetic. that was 30k miles ago. for the next couple of changes i'm going back to a conv oil and send it back to blackstone.

Nice two tone look, thinking about that now.

Usually for these types of trips I would take the Tesla, but I ended up finding some wheels last minute for the RX7. I had the 4Runner packed pretty good with aquarium stuff and the wheels. Felt like I was back in college moving back from Austin.
It's nice to use the 4Runner for what it is once in a while. Most of the time, its just sitting in the driveway baking under the sun waiting for me to take it somewhere. 85% of the time, its used for ferrying the dogs somewhere.

Installed an ATOTO A6 Pro (for Toyota - no dash kit needed) and Pioneer sub to replace the stock JBL nav system. Next up is a coverlay dash cover and suspension from Dobinsons!

Had to take a trip yesterday of about 80 miles each way. Happily driving along at 70mph and all was good, got to the first town and decided to stop and grab a drink. Started to smell something weird and was horrified to see the temp needle at high. Parked up and let the car cool down, checked coolant level all was good. Carried on with our journey and as long as the car was moving it was okay but creeped high at lights. Got back home and changed the thermostat, drove around town and all good.
Had to do the same drive today, again all good on the motorway but in towns it overheated. Went to a mechanic out of town and he said it needed burping and all would be good, he burped it with no charge and we started to head home. Again motorway speeds it's perfect but overheating at stops.
Went straight to my own mechanic and he said considering I replaced the thermostat he believed it was the radiator. So I gave him the go ahead to replace it, he gave me a call a few hours later and said there was bad coolant flow and my radiator was all blocked up, no blockages elsewhere. So a new radiator was fitted cost was $390, no idea if that's cheap or expensive but relieved it's not the head gasket.
