I see now why people try to just replace the idler on the tensioner bracket. Changing that tensioner assembly was a CHORE! While putting the battery back in to finish things up, I noticed the ground cable from negative terminal to body is hanging on by a thread. I’m gonna have to figure out how involved I want to get in that.

Got any tips/tricks for replacing the alt/tensioner? I had swapped the bearing already but the larger job awaits.

I did the tensioner awhile back and I remember it just being a looooong bolt with limited access.
I want to say a 1/4" flex head ratchet and some extensions was my best bet for clearance and then I just had to be patient and spin it free.

I ordered a replacement dash to replace my crappy cracked up one. My steering wheel is out getting wrapped in fresh leather too. It's gonna be snazzy in here when I'm done.
FYI I don't think the material Toyota put on the steering wheels was actually leather, but just a fairly convincing vinyl. I thought it was leather and didn't even check to verify. Imagine my surprise when a leather restoration kit did nothing to restore my leather. If anything it looked worse.

There was a recall on the dash for cracking issues. I got my done by Toyota for free under that. It was several years ago, though.

I read about that. Unfortunately I picked mine up in 2019.

Installed my Asfir aluminum skid. Solid, cost-effective design that replaces both of the OEM skids.

Purchased new brake pads all around, took off front passenger wheel, got the caliper pin that was stuck off only to find that one piston is seized, thus not enough clearance to put in the new pads.
Brake pad replacement postponed!
On a positive note, I bent back one of the metal plates on one of the pads, and now the squealing that occurs when coming to a slow stop has stopped. #winning

Did some snow wheeling/camping in MI this weekend with some friends. Crossed over 232k miles on the trip!

Started to replace my hubs/bearings, got stuck at the axle nut on the driver's side so moved to passenger. Discovered caliper piston boots are cracked and later had to remove the knuckle to get the new seal on since some minor surface rust was causing trouble.
Has anyone with Powerstop calipers had issues with their piston boots cracking? It's been 4 years and ~25k miles with light maintenance in between so I feel like they used bad rubber. At least the red makes for faster braking!

Nothing fun but still satisfying. Washed the 4runner today. For almost 20 years old the paint still looks so good. Black paint is a hobby...

Yep, black paint is a hobby for sure. I have had mine 22 years in November.

Installed the Jomise rear view/backup/dash camera I got for Christmas. Seems to work well, though I have not taken it for a test drive yet. All functions worked in the driveway. Mounted the dash cam on the grill so as to double as a "rock Camera" as my son calls it. Not rated as waterproof so we will see.....

Began teardown for doing cam seals and valve stem seals. Been smoking on startup for a couple years and oil consumption has increased. Will be replacing the timing belt (not due for another 40k miles but "while I'm in there...") as well as some other things to hopefully not have to break her down again any time soon.

I installed the trans skidplate/catalytic converter protection for '03-'09 4Runners from Talons Garage. Fits really well and it's beefy. If I had to nitpick I'd say they should've included some installation instructions and not just posted a guide online, and said guide could've been a touch clearer. Regardless, the four pieces were easy to install.
Here's a link to what I got (no affiliation with them whatsoever).

Keep us posted on this one, how you do your valve stem seals.
