Good information, and I don't know if anyone has run into this problem, but I'm sure some have. I have an 03 t4r, limited, with xreas. Got the cornfed 3/2 lift. WHile a buddy was trying to install it, he unhooked the line for the xreas, and the ride became stiff and rough. From what I read, xreas being an air tight system, there is no way to refill it, it's basically shot. Am I right?

So my goal is to replace all around with the bilstein 5100's. So my questions about these are:

1 ) Are all bilstein 5100's the same? Meaning do I need one specifically for a 4runner, or if it says it's for a jeep but still 5100 bilstein, it's fine? (craigslist) NIB- Bilstein 5100 Shocks For 2-3in of lift (I know these are just the front) Will these work?

2) Will the bilstein 5100's work with the cornfed 3/2 lift, can I use them together and will the ride be fine?

3)Can I use the OEM(Factory) coils/springs with the cornfed AND the bilstein?

All I want is a 3 inch lift (2 in the rear is fine) I was happy with the xreas, but that is obviously shot.

Thank you in advance to my questions that I'm sure have been answered a ton of times. I found lots of good answers and inputs on this forum, it's just difficult finding the exact answers. Figured this tread would be a good start.

1. No, not all 5100's are the same. There are different collapsed and extended lengths that will be different for your 4runner. You need ones meant for 4th gen 4runners specifically. This is especially true in the front since you need the extended eyelet on the shock to avoid issues with rubbing the CV joint if you are 4wd.

2. They will work with the cornfed lift, but a better option is to use the height adjustable perch on the front 5100 shock set to 2.5'' and oem spring. If you want a full 3'', then you can add a 1/4" spacer above the tophat to get 3'' of lift. The 1/4'' spacers are sold on Toyteclifts.com.

For the rear, you can use the oem coil and the 2'' spacer that came with the cornfed without any problems.

3. See above

Hope that helps!

Okay, great, thanks.
The front of the cornfed is a 2 part I think So I have (2) 1/4 spacers.
But I'm glad the rear will work fine. And I hope the front springs will be fine too as I don't need to go over 3 inches, I hope they will be fine.
As far as the bilstein 5100's all around. Is there a part number for both, or the cheapest place you have seen them for sale?
Thanks.

Bilstein 24-186711 - Bilstein 24 186711 Shock Absorber | eBay

Bilstein 33-187174 - Bilstein 33 187174 Shock Absorber | eBay

Cheapest price i could find with very fast shipping...

can't comment on how you set them as I used new FJ springs and set them at 1.75 because the springs gave some lift as well.

You wont regret the 5100's...even having XREAS before they are an upgrade.

Awesome, Good to know.
Thanks a lot guys. Just what I needed. I wasn't looking to spend too much.

Wanted to keep the stock springs, but might consider getting the fj springs too then.

Suspension Springs for 2006 2007 2008 Toyota FJ

does 170 for a set sound like a good deal, plus the 310 on the bilsteins? I know you get what you pay for in everything, so this total lift would probably do me much better than the cornfed.

170 seems steep for just the springs. I paid the price of shipping for my FJ rears. I'd go on the FJC forum and see if you can get a set cheap. I rarely see them listed for over 50/pair. i highly recommend the upgrade.

Hey guys, new here and had a question on this particular lift. Will I need anything else besides what's in this kit to lift my truck? If I find I need to add a sway bar link kit after the fact, that's not a big deal as those are cake to install. I don't feel like breaking the bank on a lift, but I don't want to run spacers. Plus I'm sure at 73,000 miles my shocks are about due for a replacement.

FWIW, it's going on my 2005 V6 SR5 4WD, and it has the plain suspension system on it. No air bags and no lines running from the shocks.

3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner

Now, on to tires, I want to keep my stock wheels. Would the 265/70R17 be a good choice, or should I maybe step up to a slightly larger size? I was planning on going with BFG AT K/O. What I don't want is to have to trim my fenders, and I don't want it to rub when flexing. So please keep that in mind when recommending a tire size. I also do not want to add any sort of body lift to my truck.

My intended use will be some mild wheeling, mostly fire roads and some trails, but nothing too extreme as this is my daily driver and I don't want to tear it up.

Thanks in advance and Happy Thanksgiving.

The only thing you'd possibly need is the sway bar relocate, but I'd install the lift first to see if you actually need it. My only suggestion would be to consider the ultimate kit so you have more adjustability. It's on sale right now, very good deal IMO. Nothing wrong with the kit you are looking at, but I really like being able to fully adjust the coilover and there isn't a huge price difference.

FJ Cruiser/4Runner Ultimate 3" lift package

As for tires, 265/70/17 is your best bet for no trimming. If you run aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers you may need slight trimming but nothing major.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure whether or not the adjustable coil overs will be something that I really need, but I will consider them.

The kit you posted is a solid kit, and also I found they are offering a 10% discount site wide, use coupon code 301303. In this case, it still come out quite a bit cheaper than the ultimate kit.

One other thing. How would a 275/70/17 fit on that setup with stock wheels?

As long as you don't run wheel spacers, it *should* fit with no rubbing. Every setup is different, so your results may vary. It shouldn't take a huge amount of trimming to fix any rubbing you may encounter. Personally, I love that size, I think it's a great fit. I'm running the equivalent size for an 18" wheel on my 4runner.

4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

zopperman: I copied this over from the 3rd gen section, I thought it was worth reading, I learned something. Thanks @snivilous

There are a lot of claims for the 5100 shocks, and I would like to explain two (what I would call) misconceptions. If you see any mistakes or have any questions, please tell me.

1. Preload

People say when you increase the perch setting you are "preloading" the springs. I don't know if the term preload is just thrown around, but regardless it is the wrong term when it is usually used.

A spring is defined by Hooke’s Law:

F= -kx

This means that with a force (F) and constant spring rate (k) a spring will always compress the same amount (x). When you adjust the perch setting on the shock, you are not changing the spring rate or the total force applied, so the spring will always compress the same amount -- moving the perch only changes the position of the spring seat (making the truck taller or lower), not the "preload" on the spring.

2. Perch Harshness

People claim that at higher perch settings the ride is harsher. We've established that the spring rate doesn’t change as the perch setting moves.

The 5100 is a viscous damper meaning its damping is velocity dependent and not position dependent. In that regard, perch setting shouldn't modify the harshness because the velocity of the shock isn’t dependent on perch height.

My assumption of people saying they feel a harsher ride is a result of new shocks, springs, the truck sitting taller, sway bars effective stiffness, etc.
