I realize I might be resurrecting an old thread, but I noticed a little bit of rust on the moon roof when we purchased our 08 4runner last year, and its only grown since. I'm really wanting to wire brush it and paint/seal it with something. Its covered up most times so at this point I'm not really concerned with what it looks like as long as its going to put the brakes on the rust. I feel like its only a matter of time before it starts to really leak and get into the cabin of the vehicle/headliner.

Hello everyone! I also found rust on the sunroof of my 2006 4runner! It's worse on the passenger side. I think this may be a factory issue, because it seems that there is more cases with the same problem!!!

New 2008

Just bought my 4Runner and it has this same rust issue. Does anybody have any resolution? I'm taking it to Toyota today for an inspection and to get thier thoughts on the sunroof. I'm sure they'll say 2000$, replace it.

1) I wouldn't drop 2k to replace without knowing why it happened in the first place

2) I won't drop 2000$....

I've looked at buying the assembly and replacing my rusted one then, fixing (sanding bondo painting) and reselling but again why did it happen to begin with?

Is there a way to remove the rusted frame with glass so I can take that one part to the body shop to get worked on?

Thanks in advance

Flew to Orlando morning of 6-12 to pick my 4Runner up, the dealership was near the night club 😥 We'll always have that to associate with our new 4Runner

There's a glass assembly on eBay for 950 shipped.

2007 Toyota 4Runner Limited Sunroof Assembly Glass Actuator Motor | eBay

So I'm assuming if you visit the local junk yards you could find one for cheaper as you won't need all the parts.

You can remove just the rusted part, but you will have to take the headliner out, then its just a bunch of bolts. I might be wrong here, but I would take it out sand it down, and then paint it with POR15 and replace the seals if you could.

No headliner removal

After some more research I think the offending part can be removed without headliner removal. Another link in this thread gives a play by play but I'm stuck at step one

I see the scew on the back side when the sunroof is vented but the cover on the sides seems difficult to remove. Any help?

I Attached a picture I hope

Bumping an old thread, has anyone with this problem found a solution or what is causing this besides sittingg water? .. i've owned a few cars with sunroof and not once have i noticed anything like this.. My 06 also has this issue but looking thru the diagram i can't pinpoint what parts needed to replace the contaminated items.. do i have to order a new sunroof or can the pieces be individually replaced.. i believe the seal around the glass may need replacing aswell..

Thanks

From what most have said here on the forum in several threads is you have to replace the entire unit, either new or used, they can't find just parts, pieces or gaskets new.

Thanks

I haven't read anything on these forum that says it's certain year models other than 4Gen T4Rs.

When i searched the net it appears it also affected some other toyota models not just 4runners.. just having a hard time finding the correct pieces in the diagram/parts list or if the its only sold as a whole glass assembly.

Funny that this thread was bumped. I just noticed rust myself. Looks like a piece that can be easily replaced. Will try to tear down this weekend to see who easy it would be to replace.

The problem is not being able to take things apart, the problem seems to be that replacement parts can not be bought, it seem from all I've read you can only buy the entire assembly, I hope someone finds out differently and can find the peices and parts to fix these skylights!!

From just examining mine it feels as if the seal around the glass really soft.. so the question is if i were to order a new glass roof will it come with the parts thats rusting away.. been looking at the parts/diagrams for the past few days but havent been able to pinpoint what it is..

You have to replace the glass assembly to fix this problem. You can't buy the seal separately. It takes less than 10 minutes to remove the 4 garnish pieces, 4 T25 bolts and lift it out. The only thing you are removing is the glass assembly.

My 07 has this problem too. I'm glad to see I don't have to drop the headliner, which is what I had thought. Unfortunately just the glass is $500 from the dealer. It's not leaking yet so I'm probably going to keep waiting on it.
Does anyone have any idea how many Toyotas were affected? Mine came from Chicago, that may have some bearing.
