About to buy a 2005 2wd V8 Limited 4Runner..

Hi All-

I am new to this forum, as I currently do not own a 4Runner, yet.

I totaled my car on Friday the 13th (hooray for me!) & am unable to find a replacement Subaru Legacy, because I live in Arkansas.

However, I did find a 4Runner, which will be my second 4Runner to own. First vehicle was a 92 SR5.

Those with 2wd Limited V8's... Any suggestions on what I need to look out for?

Its a 2005 with 113k miles on it. What price should I be looking at spending?

Thanks in advance for all of your replies/suggestions.

I ant speak towards the 2wd crowd, but as a guy with two (2) V8 4runners, you should first go to the toyota owners website, plug in the VIN# and see the vehicle's service history. Granted it only reports the work done at dealerships, but you should look for a couple key items with a 4runner w/ a V8 with such mileage:

1) timing belt + water pump replacement around 90k. Some people disagree w/ the water pump, but most will agree i think.

2) brake calipers. They are notorious for frozen pistons. My 03 needs its 3rd pair soon.

3) the metal around the sunroof. Look for any rust in the area.

Im sure others will have more, but those are the 3 that come to mind for me.

Good luck! Hope your potential-runner is a winner!

Thanks for the input.

Apparently, this truck was owned by the Finance Manager at the dealership, traded in on a new 4Runner, sold to a couple, who then traded it in on a new 4Runner.

They [dealership] told me that they have done all of the work on the truck, so checking the owners site should tell me what has been done.

Wouldn't hurt to make sure the exhaust manifold isn't cracked. It's not terribly common but it does happen and it's expensive to fix. More info here

I've had to replace all 4 door lock solenoids ($360 each outside of warranty)
If it has the electric sunroof, try it a few times before purchase - can cost $2-3K to fix
lube it a lot

I had the extended warranty, best $650 I ever spent, my cost was in 5 days worth of rent cars and some small roof parts that were not covered.

Might be worth looking underneath for rust, some of the rust pictures on this forum have been surprising.
