High Beam Confused...

I've read J.A.'s write up and others here regarding the Fog Light mod. What I can't understand is why there's a part 2 for the high beam issue. After the mod part 1 isn't the fog light relay now powered anytime the ignition is on, thus the fog lights should operate regardless of low/high beam selection?

If we perform mod 2, do we lose the auto-off feature of the headlights after we take the key to off? (I read - but can't find it again - a thread mentioning that after this mod the auto-off feature is nullified).

Part 2 allows the fogs to stay on while the high beams are on and I'm pretty sure that the fogs will still shut off if you do only Part 1... I believe that separate circuits control the two conditions... "fogs on with lights" (changed with Part 1) and "fogs off with high beams" (changed with Part 2). There is no loss of the auto-off feature... my auto-off still works fine... either they time out or I can double-click the "lock" button on the remote.

I did both parts of the mod, but got the signal from the parking light.

Now, my FOGS operate with all configurations, but turn OFF when the vehicle is turned off.

You will be amazed at how much the FOGS fill in even with the bright lights on.

In order for the fog lamps to light up, the fog relay needs to be energized. To become energized it needs both positive and negative available at the coil. Part one brings 12V+ positive to one side of the coil anytime the ignition is on. Since negative is at the other side of the coil anytime the headlight dimmer stalk is in the low beam position the fogs work "anytime" as long as you dont choose the high beams. As soon as you switch on the high beams or the "flash to pass" mode, then negative is removed from the coil and hence the need for part 2. Part 2 brings ground (negative) to the respective side of the fog lamp relay coil whenever the fog switch is on regardless of the headlamp dimmer position.

I followed J.A.'s mod exactly... my fogs operate with all configurations AND also turn off when the vehicle is turned off. The jumper wire goes to a "keyed" circuit.

I love having all of these lighting options!

In that case can I ground the other side of the coil at the relay vice tearing into to steering column?

Ah, perhaps that's gonna bypass the fog lamp switch and give me always-on fogs that are now out of control...

So here I stand, with a snapped pin from my fog light relay. And I was oh so careful in the bend. What now? Solder it?

Either that, or perform the 12V constant power mod which will free up another relay to bend the pin on ( Remember when bending the pin, bend it only once) or you can always do the mod from underneath the fuse box cutting the wire that goes to the broken pin and routing it directly to the power source.

Toyota 4Runner Constant Full Time 12V Power Outlet Mod

Will the relay pulled from the dash perform the same function as the fog relay? My fog relay was slightly diff from yours in the pic - the pin actually split into to thin sections as it protruded out of the relay... not a nice full piece of metal. That also means I've got nothing to really anchor the solder to... Argh! I was gonna do the constant 12V anyway, just not tonight. That's probably gonna change if I can't solder this one.

Thanks JA for the quick reply!

The ONLY reason I see for this mod is off-street use.

And I HATE the little dweebs who drive around with them on when NOT needed. I use to work with one who ALWAYS drove around with his high-beams on...Said he wanted to be noticed.

If you NEED to have the high-beams on AND the fogs on while driving on the road...then please turn in your drivers license because you are legally blind and should NOT be driving.

... didn't realize the title of this thread was "my soapbox." Go bash people elsewhere and don't presume to know HOW we will use this mod.

Anyway, it's soldered and in place. But I think after the first small bump in the road it's gonna snap.
