Kudos to Discount Tire

Yesterday I got a new set of Goodyear Silent Armor 275/70/17 put on my 4Runner, getting rid of the stock size 265/65/17.

While shopping around for these $230+ tires I came across a Discount Tire store that had a set with 50 miles on them. OK, they are not new but 50 miles? They quoted me $165 so yes I am interested.

I get to the store to make the deal and someone is doing a fit check on his Taco with the tires. Bummer

I waited a while (about 45 minutes) until he finaly decided to do something different.

Now the tires were going to be mine out the door with Discount Tire hazzard warranty- $887.

They go to install the tires and come back to tell me they will have to remove the Spidertrax to proceed. Discount can not install the tires on non-DOT approved wheel spacers.

I had already been there a couple of hours (with my 3 year old granddaughter) so I was not real excited about this. I had told them up front that I had a Daystar spacer lift and SpiderTrax wheel spacers.

I told them to put it back together and the deal was off.

The store manager overheard the situation and made me an offer.

20 minutes after the store was closed I drove away with the Silent Armors at a total cost of $632, including the Discount Tire hazzard warranty.

I have done business with Discount Tire since the 70's and I have never been disapointed.

I've NEVER EVER had good luck with any tire chain store. They ALWAYS do a bait and switch. Their prices are OK, but can do better.

I've been going to a local tire place for years....Very knowledgeable. The owner also works on cars when they get busy. Only 2 bays...but they do a lot of business. Prices are very good...and I know the tires are done right. Not done by some high-school kid.

Interesting, I have never experienced a Bait and Switch with Discount Tire or any bad expierence with them and I have bought several sets of tires in the past 35 years.
They are a tire store and that is all I expect from them.

It has been a long time but I was a high school kid at one time, at least that is the story in my year book. Glad someone gave me a chance to prove my self.

Great that you are having good service at your local shop. I do beleive in supporting local small business.

But I like supporting my self too. If it comes down to saving a few hundred dollars, I am strongly going to consider it.

Not looking to be confrontational but my post was intended to give Discount Tire a positive experience and I did not want it to sound differently.

I've been using Discount Tires for 20+ years myself and have had nothing but good service from them. My neighbor had a punctured sidewall. (New Corolla w/ 9k on the clock)I took the tire into them and explained she was a nun. They sold me a new tire at cost and warrantied all four for free. Good bunch of kids imo.

I've never had DT do a bait and switch. However, if what you want isn't in stock they will try to sell you something comparable and adjust the price to make it attractive.

I'll always call and see if they have what I want in stock, give them the go ahead to get them if they don't, and I've never been disappointed. When I got my M/S 2's, I called around 1pm and they only had 2 in stock. When they realized I didn't want anything else they said to come by the store no earlier than 4 and they would have them. Sure enough, they came through.

I think the bottom line is they don't want you going out the door without new tires.

Never had an issue with DT until I bought the T4R. Just seems like they can't balance these wheels. Other than that, DT has always given me great service. Good buy!

I don't even live in the US, but I've used Discount Tire twice as the prices are about 30% lower than Canadian retailers. Excellent service both times.

No issues with rubbing with this bigger size? Can you take some pics from the back or front to see how wide the tires are please? I just want to see how the truck looks from the back.

So how do you like the tires?

I just put on a set of the same in the Pro-Grade 265/75/16. I am very pleased with the lack of noise. Have not tested their traction as yet.

I am all stock so I need to move the front fender liner forward just a bit (or not turn wheels hard over). I think that issue will go away with installation of new suspension which will lift and (effectively)move tire away from the liner.

I almost always buy from Tire Rack; tires usually at my door in 2 days and I take to local tire place to do the mount and balance.

Jon

for what it's worth, I haven't had any issues with DT in the past... from tires for my Camaro, Tacoma, and now 4Runner. I had my BFG AT's installed by DT with the spidertraxx spacers already installed (by me) and they didn't say anything. I've had a few rotations done since, however, the past rotation, I took my 4Runner to the store I had the tires originally installed. After they started working on my truck, the manager found me and told me how unsafe spacers were. He said that he shouldn't work on my truck but he was going to anyway (just a tire rotation). I told him that I did my research, bought hub-centric spacers that were specifically designed for my 4Runner. I told him they were made of high quality material and many people here on T4R.org have had them them for 10's of thousands of miles with no issues to report. He said "ok" and kept allowing his employees to work on my truck.

When they were finished and he came to me and continued to tell me his story of how unsafe these spacers were and he's heard a ton of horror stories about complete failures on vehicles at highway speeds. I'm sure this has happened with cheap spacers placed on peoples civics or something with ill-results, but this was the first I have heard of DT having an issue with spacers. He did allow his techs to re-torque the spacer nuts when they were finishing up the rotation.

anyways, sorry for the long story, but I was quite blown away by this manager on my recent trip to DT. He was soooo adamant about how dangerous they were and was essentially expecting me to have a fatal wreck with them on. Not sure what to do from this point forward, but until they refuse to do tire rotations, I'll keep going to DT.

I'd also like to give props to Discount. I've shopped them for about 12 years and really won't buy tires anywhere else. They simply won't be beat in price, and to me the lifetime balance/rotate/flat repair that come with their tires is more than reason enough for me to do business with them. I think the dealership charges something like $45 to do a tire rotation. So basically the rotations pay for the tires over the life of them.
