Success!
Weather was perfect today and my antenna adapters had arrived yesterday so I decided to go for it.
Everything works! Radio reception was great, bluetooth paired to my phone easily, call quality was good. Watched a bit of "The Wrath of Khan" on my way down to the mailbox to test out the bypass.
Wife wanted to run to the grocery store and she thought she'd be stuck driving the Explorer because I had the 4runner apart. I finished in time for her trip. She approved. I think it took me around 2 hours to do it all. Last head unit I did was back in 1986 on my 1978 Celica GT.

Nice work, did you end up needing the antenna splitter, and did you have 2 antenna wires?

Yes, there were 2 antenna wires. Those 2 parts that I listed on my previous post did the trick.
Radio reception is great!
Oh, and thanks!

You do need to hook both up wires, you can use the METRA Ltd 40-UV43 Motorola Antenna Y-adapter and the Scosche Mda-B Micro/Delco Antenna Adapter Tip. I believe the adapter tip goes on the smaller antenna plug, then both go into the Y-adapter and finally that goes into the back of the unit.
You can get both adapters from Amazon.

thanks for the info.

I will do mine again this week end. Weather permitting. My dash kit does not seem to fit as nice as yours. Did you grind down the pins on the metal brackets?

Good luck! Hopefully it will go as smoothly (and quickly) as my install went.

No, I didn't need to do anything to the metal brackets. They fit perfectly.
What dash kit did you get? I used the Metra 95-8202. My head unit was the non-JBL Non-RDS type. I do know that if you have the limited with a different HU, you'll need to use a different kit.

Thanks for the great info posted so far! I just got my 4runner a few days ago and am trying to compile everything I need so I can order it by the end of the week.
Has anyone here installed a new HU on a limited with the JBL system? Is there anything really different than whats been listed in the first few posts? Thanks for any help, this forum is a wealth of info!

Thanks, I'm running all new wires and amps so I'm sure it won't be that smooth

I had originally planned to use the 8201 and I'm so glad that I discovered that the non-rds non-jbl needed the 8202. I actually ended up getting 2

Radio Data System
It basically can display radio station information such as genre, artist, song, etc...
Here's a video that explains it - LINK

You may want to consider ordering from Crutchfield. They'll give you that install sheet + you can call their support line if you need help. If your getting an older unit that they no longer sell (like me) then just do some research on the web. There's a few guys that have done it here and over on the Yotatech forums. In fact here's a link to someone that did it -> LINK

This post is going to save me soooo much time this weekend. I just ordered up the pioneer avh-p4400bh and all the parts you suggested so I will be throwing it in this weekend. Thanks a million! You're winning!

I don't understand what the purpose of these "relays" is that are being sold on ebay. From what I can gather, they are sold as a necessary component to bypass the lockout on the head unit that prevents the use of certain functions when moving greater than a certain speed; usually 5 mph.
Has anyone taken one of these apart? I got a hunch that the wires are just soldered together inside that piece of shrink tube. The reason I am poking this bees nest is because I just installed a Kenwood HU and in my research into bypassing the lockouts, I noticed that there is one of these "relays" that is sold for my HU.
Thing is, I installed the HU without the "relay," I just connected the parking brake wire to ground and every function on the HU works great no matter what my speed. (I haven't tested playing a dvd yet but I'm guessing it will work just fine)
If there IS a relay inside there, it appears all it would do is connect your parking brake wire to ground any time the remote wire is live. hmmm...
just curious is all ...
