Mine is 3rd gen and came out the passenger side from the factory. After crushing it a few times, I cut it off.
I have not smelled exhaust inside the vehicle so far (after a few years).
Before you come out the side, find out where the air outlet from the cab is (the vent that allows air out when you slam the doors, It shouldn't let in too much air but it does let in some). The 3rd gen is on the drivers side (behind the rear bumper side). You don't want to have the exhaust to exit by that vent.
I think you have a great idea to get rid of the rear tailpipe. I have seen a number of rigs back up on an obstacle and pack the pipe full of dirt and rocks, some, the pipe bent forward too.

Here's mine. Cut off the resonator, routed the tip out the side at ~45 degree angle.

Any annoying droaning sounds without the resonator? I was thinking of doing the same to mine but a buddy said cutting off the resonator would make it sound bad.

no droan with the res cut...just a slight growl that's not very noticeable. If you have a magnaflow or flowmaster already it'll give it a bit more than what the muffler gave you. No droan on my setup, its the muffler that'll give you the droan.
ARK - your tip is the best man. what kind is that again?

The exhaust work I had done gave it a very nice growl from the outside, but not audible inside. Sound increased, but still silent in the cabin, perfect imo. I'm not sure on the tip brand, I just dropped it off at the exhaust shop and told them what I wanted. Picked it up about 30 minutes later with that tip on. Total cost was about $80, tip was $45 iirc.

40 Flowmaster. My buddy owns a shop so I just had him bend up a cat back for me. No tip I just had him run the piping out the back and angle it out where the res would have been. I like it because it kind of looks like a "factory job".

Dumb question here. This is my first 4runner, well, the first car bought by myself through a dealer. I know its used, but since am still paying for it, and I got a 5 year Powertrain warranty, Will cutting off the resonator and installing a new tip void my warranty in any major way?
If not, my friend has a Sawzall on standby!
Thanks in advance.
