Machine gun sunroof
Over the summer I left my 4runner at my cousins while I was in Europe, come back and the sunroof is pushed inside the cabin and the weather stripping is off. No one knows what happened. Anyway we take it to a shop and after 3 weeks they "fix it". Since then it's been manually controlled rather than just pushing the button-Ive held the tilt button to reset it and it worked automatically for a while. Now that function does not work. If I hold tilt or slide the sunroof moves but I get a 'machine gun' sound from something broken on it. (which was always there before I figured out the reset function) any insight on this? It's bugging me!!

Try pulling the battery cable to reset then run it through the full range of motion to reset. I had this issue and that did the trick.

Keep ripping your cousins finger nails off one by one until it's properly fixed. Some asswipe probably sat on it while he was out drinking and partying with your ride.

Am I the only one who was hoping that this would be a sunroof replaced with a .50 cal turret for jerkoffs who cut you off?
OP, sorry for the thread jack...

The only reason I clicked on this thread was for something like that. Hoping for some knarly weaponry!!!
But the good thing about the machine gun sound is that your sunroof motor is still working, the repair might still be costly though.

Mine does the same thing. I've decided to not use it. I had it stuck open making the sound but after some beating on it and driving around i was able to shut it...since then I don't risk opening it. The problem is cheap plastic teeth on the gears and the cable likely gets jammed and then driving wiggles it and unjams it. It isn't worth a costly fix for me...it's just a window on the roof now ;) BTW mine's an 03 so it's getting pretty old and little things to go wrong is just inevitable.

PRE-DELIVERY SERVICE
PD083-06
Title:
DRIVER'S DOOR POWER WINDOW &
MOON ROOF INITIALIZATION
Models:
'07 4Runner
August 15, 2006
Introduction
This bulletin outlines the initialization procedure for the driver's door power window and the moon roof on 2007 model year 4Runner vehicles.
If the battery has been disconnected, the ECU will not be able to detect and memorize the driver's door power window and moon roof positions, resulting in the following features being inoperative:
^ One-touch open and close of driver's door power window with jam protection.
^ One-touch slide open and close of moon roof with jam protection.
^ One-touch tilt up and down of moon roof with jam protection.
Use the following initialization procedure during Pre-Delivery Service (PDS) and whenever the battery has been disconnected.
NOTE :Any time the battery terminal has been disconnected, the driver's door power window and moon roof MUST be re-initialized.
Applicable Vehicles
^ 2007 model year 4Runner vehicles.
Warranty Information
Initialization Procedure
Driver's Door Power Window
1. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position.
NOTE :At this time, the power switch for the driver's door window should be blinking.
2. Push down and hold the driver's door power window switch to completely open the window.
3. Pull and hold up the driver's door power window switch until the window closes. Continue holding the switch for approximately one second until the switch changes from blinking to a constant illumination.
4. Check for proper operation of the "one-touch open/close" by pushing the switch briefly to the "DOWN" and "UP" positions.
NOTE :Jam protection function becomes effective through the above initialization procedure.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
If power window is unable to close after initialization, perform the following procedure.
NOTE :If the power window switch is continuously operated for a long time, the power window motor will stop to prevent additional load on the motor. Continuing to press the power window switch even after the motor has stopped will cause the switch to blink and will restrict the AUTO UP/DOWN function and remote UP/DOWN function. If this happens, wait for a few minutes before attempting to reset the motor again.
1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal. After 10 seconds, reconnect the battery terminal.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position. Halfway close the door glass by pressing the switch. Then fully pull up on the switch until the door glass is fully closed, and continue holding the switch for approximately one second after the door glass is fully closed.
--> Check for proper operation of the AUTO UP/DOWN function.
3. If the power window motor is still unable to close:
Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position. Halfway close the door glass by pressing the switch. Then fully pull up on the switch until the door glass is fully closed, and continue holding the switch for approximately 12 seconds after the door glass is fully closed.
--> Check for proper operation of the AUTO UP/DOWN function.
Moon Roof
1. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position.
2. Push and hold the TILT UP" side of the switch until the moon roof tilts all the way up and then tilts down slightly (approximately 10 mm [0.39 in.] at the rear).
3. Check for proper operation of the "one-touch slide open/close" and "one-touch tilt up/down" functions by pushing the switch briefly to the SLIDE OPEN" and TILT UP" positions.
NOTE :Jam protection function becomes effective through the above initialization procedure.

Title:
POWER WINDOW / ROOF
INITIALIZATION PROCEDURES
Models:
'03 - '04 4Runner,
'04 Highlander, Prius, Sienna & Solara
August 10, 2004
Introduction
This bulletin clarifies the initialization procedures that are necessary if power is lost to the driver's door, moon roof, or back door ECU. It is necessary to re-initialize one or more of these systems if the main power source is lost either by a battery being disconnected, fuse being removed, or ECU disconnected from power. This TSB will aid in recognizing the available systems for faster and more accurate service.
Applicable Vehicles
^ 2003 - 2004 model year 4Runner vehicles.
^ 2004 model year Highlander, Prius, Sienna and Solara vehicles.
System Identification
The following table contains all the necessary information to correctly identify vehicles that require initialization. Always verify proper operation after the initialization procedure has been completed.
Application Chart
Warranty Information
Initialization Procedure
A. Power Window (Driver's Door) (4Runner, Prius, Sienna, Solara)
1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. Open the window halfway by pressing the power window switch.
3. Fully pull up the switch until the power window is fully closed and continue to hold the switch for at least three (3) seconds after the power window is fully closed.
4. Check that the "AUTO UP/DOWN" function operates normally.
B. Back Door Power Window (4Runner)
1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. Open the back door glass.
3. Press the back door power window switch until the door glass is fully closed and continue to hold the switch one (1) second or more after the door glass is fully closed.
4. Check that the "AUTO UP/DOWN" function operates normally.
C. Power Sliding Roof (4Runner, Sienna, Solara)
1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. Initialize the sliding roof by pressing and holding the TILT UP switch until the roof glass tilts upward fully (the roof glass automatically tilts downward slightly after fully tilting upward).
3. Release the switch.
4. Check that the "AUTO OPEN/CLOSE" function operates normally.
HINT :IF the AUTO OPEN/CLOSE function operates normally, reset operations have been completed at this time. However, if abnormal, follow these steps:
^ Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 12 seconds.
^ Reconnect the battery terminal.
^ Perform the initialization procedure.
D. Power Sliding Roof (Highlander)
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
2. Push and hold the moon roof switch to the "TILT - UP" side until the following cycle of the moon roof operation is completed.
Closing --> Fully tilt up --> Fully tilt down --> Fully slide open --> Fully slide close.
3. After the cycle of operation above is completed, the initialization is completed.
4. Check for the "One-touch slide open and close" and "One-touch tilt up and down" functions by pushing the switch briefly to the "SLIDE - OPEN" and "TILT - UP" sides.

I just got to experience the lovely machine gun sunroof. Scared the hell out of me. I was opening the roof and it got to the back and started popping. What scared me the most was that it was open and I had to pull on it to get it closed. Now I need to figure out what happened.

I have the same problem. It all started after I went kayaking and some sand/dirt fell into the open sunroof area. I'm assuming there's some sand or a pebble at the end of the runners making that horrible noise. I can't see anything from just a quick look, gonna have to explore in there a bit.

I have still not figured out how to fix it. However I've came to the conclusion that it is carstars fault or doing such a ghetto job at fixing my sunroof..the black wind deflector that moves when you go above 50mph is actually inside of my cabin rather than outside(where it should be??) I don't know what I should do!!!
