What lug nuts do you run?

I have some Teflon Mojaves on the 4Runner now. I ended up reusing some lug nuts that were already on the truck when it came with some chrome 20s. The problem is, it's a very tight squeeze to get the socket in to take them off. Also, I wanna get a different color and nicer/better quality lug nuts in general.

I'd like to stay away from open ended ones.

What brand/style lug nuts are you guys running on aftermarket wheels?

Im running the blacked out gorilla spline lugs. You just need a set of 12x1.5. Picked them up at my local discount tire for $37

I picked up a set of the same wheels with Muteki spline drive lugs.

I read these lugs on Wheelers were recommended:

Black and Polished Alloy Toyota Truck Wheels from Wheeler's Off-Road

Although I don't particularly know what bad things would happen if you don't use ET lugs, besides the obvious less thread engagement thing.

In lieu of starting a new thread I wanted to see if anyone was running Gorilla 91138BC lugs on the ATX Mojaves and if they had any fitment problems?

The ONLY reason I ever heard of people getting different lug nuts is looks. In 40+ years of driving cars I've never seen or heard of a Lug Nut failing. So I don't know how you could get better quality.

You need to get the ones that fit your wheels. There are several different styles of lug nuts. Buy the wrong ones because they look better and you may someday see your wheel passing you by. Check with the manufacturer of the wheel, not the internet.

To answer the OP's question, a spline drive lug has a smaller OD which makes it easier to install in the tight lug cavity of some wheels.
So yes, 12x1.5 in a tapered seat or acorn bulge. I can't remember which seat those wheels have.

This might help. (large image...)

There are a variety of brands, Gorilla is fine. I have black spline drive Gorllias on my truck.

The reason they're fine and not awesome is the grooves that the key engages the lug.
As you can see, they are rounded, and not very deep.

But they work....

If you want the best of the best (with honors,) McGard Spline drive are the best out there.

The base spins, so it won't gall your wheels and as you can see, the area where the key engages the lug is much higher tolerance with more surface for engagement.

Its $35 vs ~$120

Also there are aluminum lug nuts available, generally used on "tuner" or custom import cars, there are a metric ass ton of styles, colors and variations. I bought some for my truck in red, because I thought it would look cool... ;)

But one completely stripped out without any effort because one of my studs was mucked up. I had no idea until I pulled it off... and I did them all by hand. Aluminum has its place, but I wouldn't trust them on a 4wd application.

You know they do make a thinner wall socket, I think gorilla sells it. Make sure to use the right lugs for the wheel. I myself use the e/t conical seat style for my rims, tirerack sent me those with my wheels along with a new socket for it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know the Toyota requires a 12x1.5 and the ATX Mojave's require a 60 degree taper to tighten. The only thing I'm nit sure is if ET style lug nuts will benefit it or not. I'm concerned if the acorn bulge style lug nut will be too big to fit in the allotted space for the lug nuts.

Just ask the people you ordered the wheels from. I just let them tell me what I needed, who did you order from?

Ordered these today from wheelers:

Chrome or Black Chrome 12mmX1.5 Spline Drive E/T Ultra Style Conical Lug Nuts

From everything I have read these are the best fit for Toyota's. The correct fit for my wheels is a Conical seat - 60 degree taper.
