Hill Holder/Hill Let-er-roller!
I just had to try the hill holder system today.
Came up my driveway which is about 18 deg and stopped.
When I took my foot off the brake the hill holder went off and the truck stayed for about 10 seconds.
Then it rolled back about three feet and stopped again for about another 10 seconds and then it rolled back again.
Then the hill holder tired to stop again and the engine stopped, the batt and check engine light went on and I had to put on the brake to keep from rolling down the hill.
Kind of a funny "Hill Holder"

Re: Hill Holder/Hill Let-er-roller!
are you referring to the Hill Start Assist feature? From what I heard, it doesnt seem to be very useful at all. Does someone have good experience with this feature - and exactly how the vehicles behave going uphill after a stop with the feature and without it - from your experience testing it, not just what Toyota says?

hahah lol the Hill Start Assist feature is not for holding your 4R for a long period of time (5sec max I think). it only hold the 4R long enough to take your foot off the bake to hit the gas when you are at a dead stop on a slop. so don't mistake it for slop brake! lol

My old '86 Mercedes had a hill holder system and it would stay right where it was for ever.
I guess if it is a hill assist system then 5-10 seconds is all we can expect.
By the way, it is slope with an 'e'. Slop is when you feed the pigs.

You might want to check out this thread where HAC was discussed at length.

I've noticed a couple of times now where I'm on a good uphill and take my foot off the brake, the 4Runner doesn't seem to want to stay where it's at. It will try to creep backwards. I thought there was supposed to be a sprag on automatic transmissions to stop the vehicle from rolling in the opposite direction as the gear the vehicle is in??
My S10 Blazer will not roll backwards while in D no matter how steep the hill is (well, as long as it's not sliding backwards).

Hell, my ebrake won't even hold my rig on a flat surface. It has been adjusted three times.
I must say the brakes on this generation are the worst brakes in terms of noise, inability to hold (ebrake) and squeeking that I have ever encountered. They stop alright, but sound like crappo.
I wish I had drums on the back.

I also find the Hill assist pretty useless and just plain annoying really.

The silver lining is that with drum brakes, you have to worry about them everytime you do water crossing or take it deep mudding.

This was EXACTLY my experience tonite ! I was out testing the HAC on some little hilly street near home just to get the feel of what it is and what it does. I deliberately let it roll backwards and let the HAC do it's thing. Sounded like my engine was going to fall apart, SPRAINGING SPROINGING TWANGING ..... THEN CLICK CLICK CLICK as it let it roll backward again. After kicking in the 2nd or 3rd time, THE ENGINE QUIT AND ALL THE CHECK LIGHTS CAME ON. I was SHOCKED !! WHY DID THE ENGINE STOP ?
It took a coupla key turns to get it started again .... I tried the same exercise a 2nd time, THE ENGINE DIED AGAIN !! WTF ?? IS THIS THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK ? WHY WOULD THE ENGINE STOP ?? Took a bit of cranking this time to get it started again.
Is this the default behavior, to kill the engine after some point - that to me is extremely dangerous cause you lose all power and the only recourse is manual braking and/or e-brake. I wonder if this is a computer bug ?
I urge others to at least get familiar with the HAC and DAC (same noises) so they don't scare the sh*t out of you like it did when I tested them the first time.
Mike

Noise? Normal. You will hear the same racket when off-roading. ATRAC makes the same noise...scary at first, but you get used to it.
Engine shutting down?? Maybe it's to prevent overheating the brakes or overfrying your brake fluid??
Repeated cranking to get your engine to start?? That's strange...not sure why.
Good luck.

The "Hill Start Assist Control" works exactly the way it was designed to work. It was designed to assist you on starting on a hill, not hold you there. The 10 sec of pulsing the brakes is more then enough time to move your foot from the brake to the throttle. If you are on dirt or a slippery slop you would not want the brakes to lock, you would slide back or to the side. That
