I've heard of guys getting away with using hose clamps but only as a temp fix. I figure that since this isn't a frequent repair, it's best to do it right with boot clamps intended for the job.

Yep, there's an inner and outer boot on each cv axle. If you're looking at replacing all 4 or even 2, consider replacing the whole axle. Rebooting is a lot of work and I would say not worth it if you're doing both boots on a cv.

West marine offers some nice clamps with smooth edges.

aftermarket cvs or factory

I just went through this also, Got back from tray mtn ride and finished tearing my cv axles, So I drank the cheap kool aid and bought axles from Detroit axle, had them shipped and then installed. They lasted 3000 miles because they used crappy Chinese made products, namely there boots. I have a brand new set of axles in my shed as door stops because I just spent the coin to buy OEM, the last set lasted 216k miles so I expect close to the same. I don't have the time to change axles out every 4 months because crappy boots. If you do it yourself by the remans... Just saying....

I just changed my axles with OEM reman's. Decided to keep my originals and reboot to have spares. Honestly though, looking back (and knowing what I know know), I'd just reboot. It's not really that much extra work like some indicate. Sure, that assumes no stubborn nuts, bolts, screws, parts, etc...

I'd say if it's a recently torn boot (w/ little miles driven in that condition), a reboot is a totally viable job for a moderate DIY'er. I got spooked and went with new axles. That's not to say I think I decided wrong, just that I don't think it's too much more involved. Just make sure you get all your parts.

If the axle has been run with a torn boot for a while, then grit and grime could have damaged the joint surfaces or the tripod bearings. That would be more involved and a straight axle swap is way easier. With the prices of axles, I'd still keep the OEM and try to rebuild it, or at least make a decent assessment of how worthwhile it would be.

I used zip ties as a temporary fix when I noticed them leaking and they seem to be holding up pretty well actually (knock on wood) been on for over 1000 miles and haven't noticed any leaking. I haven't been offroad but 2 or 3 times though.

The west marine clamps are discontinued, but may be special ordered. I just did this. Unfortunately, the clamps they supplied are not correct. They're now substituting a clamp that is both too wide and also not smooth on the inside.

You need a smooth clamp that's 9mm wide. The 25-40mm size is about perfect. I found a new supplier on Amazon. I ordered them and with my prime shipping, they were very reasonable. $7.10 for a pack of ten. I installed this morning and they're great.

Search for this on Amazon: Precision Brand Smooth Band Metric Worm Gear Hose Clamp, 25mm - 40mm (Pack of 10)

Don't see 9mm anymore..
Also need two sizes right?

http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Bran...8Pack+of+10%29

"EDIT - since writing this, West Marine no longer stock the bands but Schuly has found another supplier for the bands

http://www.mcmaster.com/# stocks them in both 430 and 304 SS. See page 257 of the catalog.

The part numbers for the (304SS) 3-1/2" to 4-3/8" is 5574K24 http://www.mcmaster.com/#5574k24/=dcpb40

and for the 1" to 1-5/8" is 5574K16 http://www.mcmaster.com/#5574k16/=dcpbju

You have to order the larger in packs of 5and the smaller in packs of 10. But it is still much cheaper than ordering the high grade 316SS.

Well that couldn't have worked out any better. I just ordered these parts now thanks to you guys. I a short ride away, and these should be at my house by tomorrow, to fix my leaky CV's. (just lifted the truck on Saturday, and discovered this leak this morning)

You don't need 9mm clamps. That's the width, not the diameter. You need the size I mentioned. They are still available on Amazon... Cheers

Will have to clamp my boots these days. Two months after going from a 2" spacer lift to a 3" suspension lift I noticed the leaking on the inner boot. I am planing to add some grease to the leaking boots to replace the lost grease. What grease are people using for CV joints?

Related to this I noticed a grinding noise at full lock when steering left. The noise is grind-clunk-grind-clunk about every turn of the wheel. It only happens at full lock when holding the steering wheel tight, if I give in a bit it goes right away. CV joint or steering stops?
