Agree completely. If it's a recent tear in the boot, I would reboot. Use the Rockford thermoplastic boots. The reboot job is pretty easy.

Has anyone experienced a chronic CV boot clamp failure? In my case it's the small clamp of the outboard boot on the driver's side. I noticed the OEM clamp failed at ~90k and I replaced the axle with a Cardone and now the exact same clamp has failed again. Neither time did I find damage to the boot.

My suspension is completely stock except for harder front sway bushings and a heavier rear sway bar. I turned the steering full left and full right and it looks like I've got miles of clearance between the affected clamp and everything else.

Anyone have any theories as to what's happening? Thanks.

Not sure why the clamp is failing, but you could try replacing with a worm drive clamp. That way you can monitor and tighten them up as needed. I used these when I rebooted my CV axles: Set of 8-Toyota 4Runner CV Axle Repair Clamps Kit, Leaking Boots after Lift Kit | eBay

^+1 on the worm-gear clamps.. I just rebooted both of my axles and elected to not go with the factory clamps (firstly didn't have the right tools to to them properly, secondly I like the ability to tighten them down to a degree that I like).

When I first lifted the front end (wayy to high) my factory clamps did not hold too good and the boot started oozing. After installing the worm gear clamps the issue went away until I did a full reboot job.

I got my clamps on mcmaster as all the ones I found in the store looked too cheap and were too wide.

My inner boots started seeping grease.
I just slaped a stainless steel wormgear clamp from Orielys right over the top of the OEM clamp, and no more leak...boot kit collecting dust in the garage.

I ended up just springing for the CVJ remanned axles, after doing the OME lift and bilstien 5100's with the diff drop kit, my old oem axles were starting to click especially after wheeling in the snow this last weekend. Can't say a bad thing about the staff there at CVJ, this is the model I ended up with:

9808 TR - CVJ Axles

Going to do Hubs and front bearings at the same time when the axles show up.

The reason I mentioned this axle is they use a red boot thats is suppose to be a bit more robust, I have not done a lot of searching but wonder if they are available by themselves?

Do these handle a drop well? I am looking to mod/take care/refresh my 4 runner thats a bit old. I wanted to lift the car but a bit hesitent because of the CV angles and this is my daily - so not looking to have to replace thse often or have to worry about it.

I think the OEM boots/CV's are pretty damn good as far as quality. I talked to the guys at CVJ they said these are the best you will get for a lift with the stock suspension arms. Factors that make a difference: do the diff drop kit when you lift, do the boot stretch mod so the ribs don't touch, be wary of your CV axle angles. That being said none of them are completely bulletproof, but these are damn good.

I'll post an update when they show up and I pull everything apart and post some photos too.

I need (2) Inner CV boots for my 4Runner. I want to replace them with SPLIT boots as to not remove the axles to do so.

However, I'm having a difficult time finding SPLIT CV boots for it.

Could someone please post up a link to a place that sells them ?
