Smaller Spare Tire?

Has anyone upsized their tires from 65/17 to 70/17 (4th gen) and left the spare 65? If so, has anyone had to use the smaller spare and experienced any problems (with traction or stability control, etc.)?

Re: Smaller Spare Tire?

it's probably a very bad idea to not upsize the spare at the same time - given the sophisticated drivetrain.

I think it's should be ok as far as you use it as spare tire. If you not going to drive too fast (max. 80km/h or 50mph) and will drive to nearest tire center. Most passenger cars has small spare tire and it works well. From another point of view, if you going to use it as primary tire - no, you should get the same size as main 4 tires.

The smaller cars with the donut spares are ok because they don't have 4wd.

You COULD get away with it by lowering the pressure of the opposite side or all 3 but I think the difference is small enough to get away with it. I wouldn't drive it very far like that but it should be ok in a pinch.

Haven't tried it, but IIRC, the owner's manual warns that different-sized tires screws up the ABS wheel speed sensors...

They program in a margin of error. If you go slow enough (under 65mph) you should be ok. If you deflate the other tires, you should go much slower.

Koz - stop being a cheapass and spring for the 5th tire

This came up in another tread. I just have a need to know. I will be replacing my stock tires (when the time comes) with the stock size (Revos of course). I will be on pavement 98% of the time. I want the wider stock size. A half inch taller is not going to make a difference for the driving I do.

I'd recommend not exceed 50mph limit

So THIS is why the manual recommends to include the spare tire on tire rotation.

Offroader, what the mod do you have: "DrawTite Round Tube Max-Frame hitch receiver"? How it looks like? Do you have any images?

The stock V8 hitch looks the same, round tube and all. It may even be better.

Yep, but my japanese version 4Runner didn't include a receiver, so I had to purchase an aftermarket one.

I have mine as OEM. Looks like all North American 4Runners comes with OEM hitch.
