yay or nay gas tank on roof rack

yay or nay gas tank on roof rack? planning to add 6 gal. should be enough, but would you consider adding gas tank on your roof rack, seeing how dangerous it can be.

Better than on the swingout IMO. I plan to add some on my rack.

Check these out.

Those RotoPaxs look cool, but I'd rather have a large 5 gallon container rather than a dozen 1-2 gallon ones. The 4+ gallons are nice with how thin they are, but the footprint is much larger. Realistically a gallon or two is not going to extend our range that significantly. That's just my opinion, but it definently is a nice product for people who want to use their rack or different storage options.

If you secure it to your roof, make sure it is very secure, the lid is not leaking and the container can't fly or wiggle when driving and you should be okay. I wouldn't put it on the roof, but its doable.

that can actually looks pretty cool and has plenty of tie down spots. that would probably be the best choice if you want to put a can on top...and some velcro straps or another small strap on 4 corners and you would be good to go

Edit: I wonder what the weight raiting is...i mean how much can you stack on top of that safely. for those trail riders...alot of equipment needed and if you have that up top...you cant put too much on it.

but i could just imagine driving down the roard and seeing someone holding that up to their gas tank and me thinking..."WTF is that!?" :haha:

Wow, the size of 1.75 gal can: Size is 13.50" Wide by 15.00" Tall by 3.5" Deep which might fit inside spare. I'll measure inside of that rim tonight. If it fits: damn! I'm getting 2 of these:

I think water weighs more than fuel, 8lbs/gallon vs 6lbs/gallon...(depends on temp) Aside from the leakage or flying off concern, and once that gets confidently resolved, it is putting up there and taking it down. I guess 36ish lbs is not that much. I would maybe try it with water and see how easy/quick you can put it up there and take it down without dropping it, or have it fall on your head.

I wouldn't be too crazy about fuel cans on the roof, but I guess if they were very well secured...

Last few years, I've usually carried 5gal with me on the roof rack for offroad trips. I use an inexpensive, red Walmart plastic can and wrap the spigot with silicone tape. It's very prone to leaking otherwise but the silicone tape has been 100% effective. Cheap, simple solutions -- gotta love 'em.

You do know the properties of gas right?? It doesn't explode, it burns. The only reason it explodes is if its pressurized, creating what's called a BLEVE..... So no I wouldn't worry about it exploding. That being said the tank when full will build pressure on its own with elivated temps, therefore you'll need to bleed the pressure out or get a can with an opening that relieves pressure on its own.

Looks cool OP, and could come in handy.

Those gas cans in the pervious pictures actually look relatively strong, it's those angles on the sides as well as those holes in the center that give it substantial strength. Of course it all depends on the thickness of the plastic and so on, but I do like the look of them. As for putting all this extra weight on the roof, IMO not the greatest place for it, more so on trucks with larger lifts. Keep the racks for the lighter stuff.

I have been thinking of ways to get a second fuel tank down under where the spare tire was. The extra pump, hoses, pipes, tank selection switch, and fittings are the easy bit, it's the filling pipe that will be the trouble and as I'm not good with body work... And don't know anybody who is
