I've got the cracked dash as well. Going to try a few local dealers to see what responses I get. I'll let you know if I make any progress.

It probably was one of the replacements.
I would check at your local parts yard like what ^ he suggested.

In the SF/Bay Area I would head to Rancho Cardova Toyota recycling or around that area that has a lot of 4th gen 4Runners with dusty, but uncracked dashboards.

I recently purchased an 2004 4 Runner for my 15 son this past weekend. Didn't really think about the dash being a big deal till I got home with it. Got a ball park quote of around $1400.00. They recommended I take it to the dealership and try to get the warranty. The dealership referred me to the 1800 number for Toyota headquarters. The person I spoke was polite but blunt and basically said Toyota is not going to replace any more dashboards under the warranty enhancement program. I told him they already admitted there was a problem and they were at fault. I told him if this was for a stuck accelerator or airbag issue they would still cover it under a recall. But it was classified as warranty enhancement. I'm sorry but a defect, is a defect. Maybe they will open it back up enough people continue to complain. Has anyone seen or used the Coverlay Dashkit before. It dose not look bad for covering up a cracked dash. May give it a try if I can not get anywhere with Toyota. May try to have some legal counsel contact them and see if that helps.

My dealer actually contacted us and replaced although out of warantee for over 10 years.

The hot, hot, hot Bahamas sunshine cracked (and warped) the original one - but I've had worse dashboards with other cars.

Original owner of a garage kept 03 here that didn't start to crack until six months after the original extended warranty expired and Toyota said NFW Just installed the Coverlay and very, very impressed. It basically refreshes the dash in the same color (black) and texture, easy to install and $165 shipped from Rock Auto. Looks far better than the carpet cover I had on there and people can't even tell it's an overlay upon first look. Makes me happy for a whole lot less money. In fairness to Toyota, they really didn't even have to extend the warranty as long as they did - stuff happens and, as they said, they had to draw the line somewhere. If it holds up for ten years, I'll be even happier.

Just Called our local dealership and Toyota North America, their response was the case is closed and theres nothing they can do regarding the support recall whatever they call it, I reckon unless you're willing to pay the $1800 we continue to call and hope they reopen the case

Last year I got letter from Toyota about the dashboardm I took it to Ackerman Toyota of St. Louis, it took 2-3 months for part to arrive and it was replaced for free, I was pleasantly surprised Toyota/Dealeship put new part considering truck has now over 300k miles and is pushing 20 years now, and dashboard just had few small cracks.

Mine got a crack above the glove box just like the OP. Drives me nuts. My T4R has also been garaged almost it’s entire life and it’s an 03.

I asked my local dealer in Chicago how much to replace the dash (now that it's no longer free), and he gave me a price of $600 or so. Main reason is, the process is super labor intensive, at least a couple hours to disassemble everything and reassemble.

If I ended up paying for this job, I'd want to take care of anything that tends to go wrong and requires dash removal while it's apart... have the HVAC system completely checked, maybe replace the heater core...
