If it weren't for the hideous airbag opening on the passenger side, i would seriously consider getting one of these to cover the the cracks.

Did anyone ever look into a replacement dash? Such as one from a junkyard? I'm curious as to what it would cost to swap one out. I'm guessing it would get expensive with labor, airbags, etc.

lol.....been there and done that too.....but didn't get a t-shirt.

I searched online and called several salvage yards. The problems was running into was that either the airbag had been deployed or they had cracks in them already.

New from Toyota they are about $1000 plus labor. I can't remember exactly, but think labor is around $400-$500.....maybe more.

I wouldn't think plastidip would keep the bag from deploying but I'm also not sure it would seal the cracks.
Now you got me thinking! is anyone with a badly cracked dash willing to try an over spray or a filler and plastidip combo?

I know MoMo is anal about his vehicle but I see he doesn't recommend any cleaners (me and Him have identical trucks)
Where as I do use cleaners...I agree with MoMo that heat is mostly not the issue, but I do think that using a high quality cleaner will help preserve the chemical balances and help keep the dash moist without making it greasy...

I usually use a mild Dawn soap and water washrag to scrub the surfaces and then a second quick pass with a pure water soaked rag... a quick dry towel and then apply the cleaner (I do not recommend any petroleum biased products)

I found and really like the "Smart" cleaning products (available at my Toyota Dealer)
Its Ph balanced, UV A&B protection, non-greasy (no joke it is), can be used on any plastic or vinyl surface (inside or outside) including plastic trim bumpers and exterior trim...its also very cheap and has a nice new car smell...I have also noticed that it helps restore the color of the trim on my doors (where you rest your elbow with window down) I will try and take a picture and get a conformation on the brand name tonight... my $0.2.

I used to use the armor-all F1 with sun stop & IT worked well for the Bonneville but its too greasy for my Toyota.

I really recommend using protection against sun rays (as you by now have noticed you still get sun burned if you are dowsed in water; or on a cloudy day) its not about moisture or the amount of sun (not that it help or anything) but the nature of radiation and its relation to materials and half-life of covalent bonds of the item itself; keeping the suns rays from penetrating the dash can keep it from aging as quickly. (correct me if I am wrong)

IE: Think; beer in clear bottles gets skunky when left in the sun at a faster rate (that's why they do it in the first place) and a dark tinted beer keeps a little longer? the sun (also** this year the sun has been spitting out a lot more Coronal Mass Ejection then normal (last 26,000Years) be aware!)

I've also got cracks on my dash in my 05 Limited. They're to the left of the speedo and also above the headunit and runs over along to the passenger side, above the glovebox and across the airbag. It sounds like I need to also call in about this......hopefully I'd qualify.....

Anyone else see this yet?

2003 Toyota 4Runner Crack In Dashboard | CarComplaints.com

I'm surprised there is no type of recall on this yet.

There may be an obvious answer to this, but what is the deal with applying Amor all to the dash?

Another '03 SR5, have crack that also appeared overnight, above the dashboard, then spread all the way across the passenger side, diagonally from lower right to upper left.

Called today, REF# 1209040811 on my 03 limited (FYI my 03 SR5 is not cracked)

the rep said there is nothing Toyota can offer as far as recommendations for repair or help with defects.

She told me I should be able to take it to the dealer and they will know how to repair or replace the dash.

i can tell from talking with her, ALOT more people are going to have to spend the 10 min to call in order for anything to happen.

it would be nice if we could do a massive conf call to Toyota and demand a resolve. Honestly, who would expect them to do anything about a vehicle that is 10 years old? But as the old saying goes, if you don't ask you don't know.

Yeah, i think it will take a lot of people calling for them to even think about doing anything, but if you just sit on your hands you would never know.

I would hope the dealership would know how to replace the dash.....lol.....for $1k plus installation, they had better know how to do it.
