Max Spare Tire Size, Stock Location

I don't know if I am just not using the right tags or what, but for the life of me I can't find any definitive information on this.

So I'm running 285/70R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 4Runner and lately I have become more and more concerned about the fact I still have a factory spare tire. I don't have the money right now to buy a CBI rear bumper combo like I want to, I was wondering if I can shoehorn a 285/70R17 in the stock spare location on my '04 V8 Sport?

What I've read says the only way is if you air it down. Not sure how helpful that will be if you get a flat unless you have a compressor.

I believe a 285 rubs the panhard bar inflated.

I heard a worn down 285 will fit, but you would probably be looking at a worn down street tire if anything.

I recently replaced my stock spare with a 275/65/18 BFG. It would not fit in the factory location w/o removing the tow hitch. Leaving the tire in the cargo area was not an option since I need that space for other things. I decided to go with a CBI tire carrier because it was less expensive than a CBI bumper package, and I need easy access to the cargo area daily.

Noob:

How do you like living with that CBI tire carrier? Is it pretty secure with no rattles?

I'm considering the jump to 285's on my next tire purchase and want a matching spare.

Thanks,
~Doozi

I really like the CBI tire carrier. It is a great solution for my over sized spare tire and hi-lift jack. I chose it because I needed a way to carry a full spare and have access to the cargo area at any time.

During daily driving I don't notice it's there until I look in my rear view. The tire carrier does move around a little when driving on rough roads, but its nothing that bothers me, or is unsafe. There is a knob that applies tension on the carrier to reduce most of the movement (that's what I think its purpose is). I have never noticed any rattle from the carrier when driving on city streets, and for the most part the carrier makes very little noise. I don't have $2K to spend on a CBI bumper kit right now, so the CBI tire carrier is a good alternative. I'm very happy I got it!

Maybe barely, airing down would have a better chance, or keep air with a ratchet strap around trying to mash it down.

I just put one in aired down to 20PSI. It will just BARELY touch the track bar. Shouldn't cause a problem. I've run it for 2.5-3 weeks and havent had any problems or rubbing or anything.

do you have it on an 8in or 7in wheel, and do you think it would make much of a difference?
