The TPMS sensor is part of the valve stem assembly; the actual sensor body lives inside the wheel/tire. See here. It's in the same location on all 5 of your wheels; they communicate wirelessly so no cables between sensor and vehicle.

I went on a road trip last week to CO and my light started blinking when I got to Telluride. Figured I would just deal with it till I got back to CA. Well, got back last night...turned on my car today and the light wasn't there. I'm thinking it had to do with elevation changing the tire pressure or something.

I have a 2004 4Runner

What would be an average lifespan for a pressure sensor? If one goes out on my 2007, is it better to just replace them all?

I recently bought tires at Discount, and went to put the tires on the wheels before I did my suspension.... They reminded me that they'd need to pull the sensors off my current tires, so I'll have to wait.

Anyways, Discount Tire quoted me at $60/each, fwiw.

I was on a week long road trip when my tpms light began to blink... it blinked the entire trip. I had to cover it with a piece of black electrical tape... (driving at night) annoying light. One of the sensors batteries died and lost contact with the computer... I ended up doing the suggested tpms bypass mod. Light went off and no problems since. I check my tire air pressure (including spare) regularly... no need for the nanny light.

If I can afford it, I like to have everything working the way it's supposed to.

The light is blinking on my vehicle. I like to and usually do everything myself on my vehicle, however, this is something I don't think I can do because I can't get access to the sensor or communicate with the computer. Is my only option to go to the stealer?

So you're not one of the select few who has $1xxx.xx scan tools laying around at home? Say whhaat?!

Hopefully it's just a dead sensor battery and not the receiver. Any decent tire shop should be able to scan your TPMS sensors to see which one is out. If so, tire shop TPMS replacement will also be cheaper than dealer mark up. Depending on the age of your truck/sensors, you might as well replace all 5 (remember the spare has a sensor too) to save yourself a headache later on.

If you don't want to replace all 5 sensors, air down each tire one by one. If the light goes solid, air it back up and move to the next tire. When the light keeps blinking even though you're aired down, that's the busted sensor. Asshats at discount tire tried to tell me all 5 were bad, told them to piss off because it was only 1 sensor. They changed that one out, reset the computer, and I was on my way.

Except that bypassing the light is incredibly stupid. I don't care how often you check your tires, when you hit a nail or something going 80 mph and your tire rapidly deflates, that light is the difference between being able to pull over safely and blowing out a tire, losing control, and potentially killing yourself or someone else.

Oh. Em. Gee.

How did the everyone survive in the pre-TPMS world?!?!

It's not that stupid. Most folks today can't identify half the warning lights on their car. I see more folks driving around this time of the year with the indicator on due to low air temps and no one cares to inflate their tire back up. It's the same thing.
