Climate Control Panel Backlight

My climate control information panel is backlit when my lights are turned off but when I turn my headlights on the backlighting turns off.

Does anybody know of a solution for this problem?

Thanks

The lights are not burned out. The backlight works when my headlights are off.

There is no back lighting when your headlights are off. Mine burnt out in two parts, when my lights were on I could only read half of the panel, then they all burnt and I couldn't read any of it. I'm not positive but I think the numbers are always there, at night the back lighting comes on so you can read them. Go out with a flashlight and shine it on the panel at night, you should then be able to see them.

Mine seems to work opposite then. Beacause there is backlighting when the headlight are off. Are the instrument panel lights supposed to be on when the headlights are off because mine are on all of the time?

I'm 99% sure there is no back lighting when your lights are off. There might appear to be, but I don't believe there is. I also do not have a limited so I could also be very wrong. But all threads(and there are a lot of them) about IP lights and clock/climate control lights not working is always bad bulbs. Maybe someone with a limited can chime in here??

That is what it looks like. I am 100% sure that my backlight is on with the car running and the lights off. I park in a garage and lights in the garage are off and car is running with the lights off the backlight is on.

I'm going with Presta on this one. I seriously doubt your panel is back lite when the headlights are off.

If it is, it shouldn't matter if the car is running or not. Either way its not a common problem so there's no easy fix.

Maybe a couple pictures would help convince us non believers

SOrry guys, but it is backlit.

As long as the key is on the backlight comes on, when the lights are turned on it follows the instrument panel intensity setting from the rheostat.

Just verified this this morning on my 08 Sport.

Like I said, I could be wrong, I am just speaking from the experience I had with mine. I could read mine fine when the headlights were off, or during the day, but at night, with headlights on, it wouldn't illuminate and I couldn't read it. Are you assuming that because the display and numbers come on with the key, that that means its back lit? Not being an ass, just curious. I just went and looked at mine. Yes I could read it with the key on, but I don't believe that means its back lit. My advice to the OP is to follow the write ups and replace the bulbs, it will cost about $20 and 30min of his time. If that's not it, he has a problem I haven't read about before.

Yes, definitely back lit. I started it up in the garage (total darkness) and the backlight is obvious. You can't notice it in daylight.

Once you turn on the lights, the backlight dims and it's the instrument light brightness knob that controls the backlight. Just maybe the OP has the dash lights turned all the way down?

Keep in mind that its very possible the wiring is different from the early to late 4th gens.

I know Toyota changed the wiring slightly and then came out with this TSB (TSB EL010-03 Gauge Visibility Improvement) for the earlier models. Maybe that included other backlighting because when I get in my 4runner at night (no garage required) as long as I don't phyiscally turn the lights on I can start my truck and everything will remain dark.
