Clunk noise turning Left-Right in 2008 Toyota 4Runner!!!

Hi every one, I'm new to this forum and I have a question not sure if it has been covered on 2008 4Runner. I hope some one that knows 4Runners or have experienced this loud clunk noise when turning left-right but mostly left sharply. Any ideas would be great and appreciated. I have read numerous responses from numerous people so I’m not sure what it is. Is it sway bar, drive shaft, shock’s/struts, steering shaft, bal joints, I’m not sure. So before I take it Toyota dealer I want to have some kind of idea what it might be. Please Help.

I have the same sound on my 2005. I think I have something loose in back. On a previous car I had it was the trailer hitch making a similar sound.

I have a similar sound with my 2009. It only happens when I turn sharp left with a little speed and the clunk sounds like its coming from the front driver side wheel. If you find anything put be sure to update us.

If you are turned all the way as far as it will go - probably just need a dab of grease on the stop

I will take my to Toyota dealer, and see what they come up with, how they will try to still me, but I will let every one know what they say.

Don't do that yet. Put a bit of grease on the steering stops. It will take you less than 30 seconds.

Put some grease on the stops, front and back, use something very sticky so it stays on longer, u might as well grease up the driveshaft too while u have grease.

That is a very good idea, I did not think of that, it's possible that while turning that the steering stops are brushing touching each other. I will get grease during my lunch brake and try this on the weekend.

Mine did the same. Just added a bit of grease to the stops and all is well now.

That's what it was for me. I only heard the clunk while at full lock when going over a pump -- for example, when turning into my driveway and going over the lip between road and drive. At full lock, the steering stops are touching. Then when the wheel goes over a bump, the stops move in relation to each other, causing the clunk.

It's been a few years since I greased mine, so I'm hearing the clunk again. I just need to get some grease and grease them.

Do you by any chance have a picture where exactly the steering stop is? I have not yet lifted the car up, and will do it on the weekend. I'm guessing it's some where around the CV boot and axle.

Thank you for help it seems to work.

I got a chance lift the 4Runner up last night and sure enough the steering stops needed some good greasing. It seems the noise went away. When I looked at the steering stop next to an axle on each side it looked like the metal was striped and that there was rubbing there. I will get a chance to test this a bit more this week. I also took time too grease everything else under the truck. I did find a problem with a left rotor that I will ask in a different topic. Thanks a bunch all you saved me some time and money by not taking this to the dealer.

You're welcome. I learned this from the forum as well. When I first took it to the dealer, the dealer said "unable to duplicate."
