3rd this. Dont buy fancy stuff. Get the cheap bug netting and some painters tape. That freah air will feel great.i went and bought magnets. They work, wrapped em in duct tape so they dont hurt the paint. But honestly... some painters tape and youre fine.

Here is a ready made option. For all you that sleep inside your 4Runner like me.

You can buy either the side windows or the rear hatch window. You don't have to buy it as a set.

CODE: SUMMER15 for 15% off.

We have been sleeping in the 4runner for a couple of camping seasons. The two things I have learned:

-Alternate storage is critical. A rooftop box or something to keep all of your stuff in makes it a lot easier. We usually had to move stuff into the front seats which makes the shift from sleeping to driving and vice versa troublesome.

-Remove the rear seats for maximum length. If we leave the rear seat cushions in, my 5'10" frame is cramped. Take the cushions out and it's comfortable.

We have used backpacking inflatable pads, foam pads/cusions from Home Depot cut to fit the space, and just sleeping bags. The latter is asking for a terrible night's sleep. The foam is the most comfortable, but it also takes up a lot of volume in the car when stored. The backpack cot sounds interesting. I may look into that.

I love using the 4runner this way. I just need to dial it in more.

I've slept in the back of my 4runner dozens of times while at the track. I used to put down a 72" inflatable mattress, and force the rear hatch to close. Super comfortable.

I'm 6'0, and a side sleeper, so with my knees slightly bent it's more than enough room. Going forward though, I'm going to remove the rear seats to get a little more room for a bigger / longer mattress.

Before I got my 13 foot trailer camper, I camped in the 4runner for about a month with a cat, all my tools, a bike, golf clubs, camping cear, water etc.

I tried the front seat flat option and a cot in the rear was the most comfortable. I do have a sears roof box for all the lighter camping tarps and chairs and blankets.

Once the cat is gone someday, that would make it easier for sure to go long term in different weather

After 2 road trips camping, I've learned a couple things. Trip 1 was on the cheap, cheap. I laid down the seats and put a camping pad inside and filled the interior with tons of stuff I didn't really use (giant cooler, pop up canopy, large folding table, etc etc etc). Was a daily struggle moving and fighting with it and trying to sleep. I did make some custom cut window pieces and vents, which helped with sleeping.

Trip 2 I bought a trifold 4" foam mat. Made life better. Tried to downgrade to a smaller cooler, but it was trash for ice retention and ended up buying a nicer one on the road. Still carried too much stuff and had to fight for organization. I did buy a little small "solar generator" for my phone and stuff.

This next trip will be about 45 days. I'm seeking to upgrade my entire setup.

Drawing inspiration from the forum and some commercial deals (albeit for 5th gen) I'm working out a drawer system for the back that will extend for sleeping. I want it to be able to go 60/40 to allow for the use of a 3rd seat, when needed. I'm 6'4" and can't sit up in the back with a mattress, so I like having the back seat free to sit in if I want.

The plan so far is a platform in the rear that sits flush with the cargo pockets above the wheel well. It will sit on 80/20 aluminum T stock with feet.

Will have 2 locking drawers (length tbd, but 32-34") roughly 60/40 split in width.

D rings located on top for a fridge / battery, possibly some slits cut with a little bar underneath that I can run flat straps through to make it more modular for tying stuff down.

The back end will utilize locking drawer slides that have flat stock mounted between each slide. This will let them close over the main drawers. Flat stock will have some holes for the sleeper boards to sit in. Each side is independent. A couple of velcro tabs to keep it from rattling.

The sleeper boards will have rubber feet to hopefully ride well and not rattle when not deployed. Will have some bolts (or maybe the rubber feet) to slip in to the flat stock holes. This could also be a use case for the inset strap bars to tie them down when not in use.

Probably some little wingies to cover up the area between the cargo boxes and the back gate.

Fancy it up with some nice drawer faces and what not.

This is a working idea in progress, but after thinking of stuff, forgetting it, then trying to think of it again, I wanted some ideas down.

Will come back, or perhaps make a full post if the project doesn't turn out to be a disaster.

edit: My numbers are not accurate for the cargo area. Drawer and platform size will adjust accordingly when it's not 20 degrees outside and I can get out to it.

This is what I use for ventilation! You can get them from home depot where the gutter stuff is. It has a plastic outter with screen inner layer for bugs.

I bought some suction cups with integrated clips to make an awning. Will suction cups damage the 4Runner putting them on the paint at all, or would it be better to stick with attaching the suction cups to the windows?

I use a super heavy duty suction cup and will only mount to the windshield. Safer and much easer to clean before using the suction cup.
