Wow!! My '06 has a SMALL spec that I plan on fixing below the weather stripping below the rear window. And of course, it has the small spec under the chrome molding that is very common. When it warms up, I plan on pulling the chrome piece, painting it, and taking care of the rust at the same time. My case is so minor you can't see it unless you look for it.
How often do you wash your truck?

Yikes! I had some as well, but just a small amount at the corner of the hatch molding. I've since had my hatch repainted.

I'd have to agree and suggest that you look under your runner as well. I Have worked for Toyota for over 4yrs and never seen rust on the body of a 4th gen like that before. Normally its under the truck or there will be a spot or two on the body. I'd prep those spots and at least hit them with touch up paint if i were you. Not sure if you have a clear coat issue or some nasty chemical got onto your runner.
None on my '04 except on the drivers foot step under that plastic piece. Going to fix it this summer. Previous owner took care of it and i wash it anytime it gets salted.
I have a 3rd gen and the previous owner did take good care of it however it's a 15 year old car and the elements are getting to it.
As yourself I live in Montreal Quebec where we see more road salt than any other place on earth so it eats away... you don't wanna see what my undercarriage looks like.
