Installing used transfer case actuator motor

I posted recently about drowning my son's 4Runner and shorting out the actuator assembly. I bought a new (used) actuator motor and the part did not come with the rods installed in it. This seems wrong to me, I was totally planning to remove t-case and install the new actuator. Is there a way to install this without removing the t-case or taking apart the actuator (which I have no idea how to put back together once apart, springs and gears all fly apart, ugly) Help!?!?!

CNJ - Unfortunately that link you posted is only for the front differential. He's looking for the actuator on the transfer case itself.

Also, I can't remember the last time seeing one but I thought it was supposed to come with the rods and you have to tear into the transfer case to install it. At least that's what a buddy of mine had to do on a V6 4runner quite a while ago.

I think I'm correct if only judging by this illustration:

Can you send me the illustration picture, never came through. I wish it was as easy as the front diff change. I'm not sure its possible without the rods...thanks

Impossible to install

I just got off the phone with the outfit that sold me the unit and they admitted that once the motor is removed without splitting the t-case, its ruined and impossible to install. Cool thing is they are reimbursing me the shipping to return it and have a complete t-case and motor for a few bucks more...Thanks guys!

So you are going to replace the transfer case and actuator together? Do you mind saying how much the unit was?

New t-case with actuator

The t-case plus actuator (low mileage unit) runs $800.

What outfit did you get your t-case/actuator from?

sknightjr1 -- how much did it cost you to get the new transfer case installed?

Thanks

I had a similar issue. Dealer quoted me $2570 to fix the actuator itself (includes 12 hours labor) OR get a used transfer case off a wrecked 4Runner for $1270. I went with the $1270 option. The part came from a 2007 4Runner with 81K miles. My 4runner as well is a 2007.

I kept meaning to annotate and post this picture I had on my phone. Sorry about it being slightly blurry, my co-worker was in the middle of resealing a 5th gen transfer case and I didn't want to take up too much of his time.

The transfercase is similar to the 4th gen units beside this one lacking the Torsen T3 center differential.
