Falken Rocky Mountain/Wild Peak ATS
Is anybody on here currently running this tire? I'm looking at getting rid of my 265/70/17 BFG's and going back to a 265/65. The BFG fuel mileage and road noise are killing me. I found a dude on CL that has a set of these Falkens with 8000 miles on them for $500 to $550.
I read a couple of older reviews on here that were pretty good with one negative. Anybody have a current opinion?
Thanks.

In the last pics I saw Demello had already changed those back to trail grapplers... I'd guess maybe he put those on for the ad?
Check out the reviews on the tire retailers. I've only seen one or two members here with them and they seemed to like them alright but a lot of people on discount tire and some other sites say they ride like you're driving on marbles and other complaints.

I actually read the driving on marbles complaint from a member post here, but then again others had only good comments. I've done a bunch of research on tires to replace the BFG's; and there doesn't seem to be a good compromise between good aggressive looks, mild road manners, and something that could go off road occasionally.

There's really not, that's the reason I ended with BFGs. I meant to add to the last post that the Falkens were on my list before I got them and that's why I had as much info as I do.
People will say other ATs are as good, but I think the truth is that there is a difference between a true AT and a street AT-
Deep sidewalls give the aggressive looks, heavy sidewall take a beating, and large gaps in the tread get traction. Those 3 things are also the things that make true ATs louder, heavier, stiffer, and less speed friendly. It seems that no matter how advanced the design of new tires coming out are, they just can't blend street friendly with those features.

As much as I would like to be in the category of people that need a true AT, I need a street AT or all season tire. Unfortunately, my truck is on pavement 99% of the time. I should have considered this before buying the BFG's but everything I read said they were good on the road.

I know what you mean, that's the reason I went back to 265/70 from 275/70.
I think the BFGs are probably pretty good on road when compared to alternatives that are 'true ATs' but not compared to 'street ATs' i.e. mainly p-rated tires. You can still get a ton of mileage out of em but they're going to be a little louder, rougher, and thirstier than a Revo or Open Country AT or Destination AT, or anything along those lines. That's why BFG makes the Rugged Terrain for those don't want a 'true AT' instead of trying to sell everyone on the All-Terrain.

I have these on my 18 inch wheels because I had a very hard time finding more agressive tires for 18 inch sizes. They are really nice tires, sidewalls look super sexy but not as good in snow or mud as a more agressive tire. The street ride and handling are very good, no marbles at all they have a solid center rib unlike the Gen GrabberAT2 I have on my other truck (I highly recommend these too but they handle a little squishy)I also drive 90% on road so the wildpeaks ended up being a good choice for me and I get lots of compliments although when I buy new I will shop around for a more agressive tire maybe duratracs.

Thanks for the comments. I think I may give them a try.
Anybody want to buy some BFG's?

Sorry absolute, i didn't see this thread until after i had sent you the pm. I have been looking around at tires as well, and this was one i was curious about. I love my Rugged Terrains, but since changing out the suspension the 265/65 18's are looking a little small. OHP, when are you getting your new tires?

I haven't decided yet for a couple of reasons. First, I'm hesitant to buy tires from some dude on CL. If they are bad in any way, I'm SOL. Second, I'm not sure I want to go back to stock size. I love the way it looks now and if I ever do get the chance to go trail riding, I've got one of the best tires to do it with. So, I'm undecided with what to do.
As I stated one of my main reasons for going back to stock is fuel mileage. Which sucks with an SUV no matter what but as gas prices keep rising, every little bit counts. I'm wondering if the reduced mileage has more to do with the aggressive tread or the oversized/heavier tire? I would assume it is a combination of both. Right?

It is certainly a combination but I'd be willing to bet that mileage would increase by going to a P rated tire (like I assume the wild peak is?) with the less aggressive tread. P rated tires are the same height, but usually much lighter.
Switching over to a 255/75 might even net better results with the thinner width.

I think the 2 mpg i lost when iput on wheels and tires was well worth the extra height. Even these look kinds small at 285 65 18. It still has plenty of power and looks great. The tread on these is pretty mild. But way better than most street ATs. The 2 mpg i lost when i put the the rack on is another story, not really worth it as i rarely use the rack but it gives it the taller profile and makes the truck look bigger. Id rather look cool than get mpg, priorities right?

No doubt the P rated tires are lighter. I think my Rugged Terrains are 8-10 lbs lighter, a piece, than Matt's A/T's.
Good thing for me is that i rarely go out of town in my truck. Whenever we go out of town we take my wife's company car, since we don't have to pay for the gas. I work out of the house so really my driving mostly consists of taking and picking up the kids from school and running other errands. Maybe i should just say screw it, throw a body lift on and go to 33's.....lol

Same here, i usually drive the tundra and only take the runner when i need the space. The tundra rear seat usually is folded up and is full of tools. Plus i dont like leaving it in parking lots with stuff in the bed. Its the main reason i started modding the runner, its more of a toy now.
