also, @iBison , @Stuck CAPS has made a thread with links to helpful youtube videos that you may want to consider adding to the first post somewhere and merge the threads, sort of

Perfect timing

Thanks much for the rundown..looks like you saved me a couple hundred hours..
Im currently in the hunt for a 4th generation for work and play and wondering what you found ultimately to be the deciding factors for picking your 04 Sr5 ?..
Also..which 04 Sr5 did you get ?
Thanks in advance..

I wanted to go back from a car to a 4x4 for the towing ability, roominess, fun factor and for camping. Being in Illinois it's going to be mainly on the road.

I bought an 04 v6. I had originally thought about a third gen, but I like the 4th much better. I had also considered a Sierra and drove a pathfinder as well as some cars. The pathfinder was an 03 or 04 and it felt cramped and had to little head room. The 05s were supposed to be better but at a considerable jump in price and no roll down rear window. I like the avalanche but like the Sierra I didn't want mileage that low. I like the ridgeline but wanted a real truck. I got a free upgrade to a murano last year on a trip and while the thing was very nice there were a lot of small things that would make me not buy one like the RFID key, steering wheel, radio, etc.

About the only thing I liked better about the third gen was the price, which would have left more money for mods. Things I like, slightly better mileage, more power, more room, better looking. Things I don't like so well, but not that big of a deal are the orange dash lights and the dim dash lights. I wish the driver seat went back a little further. I miss dual climate control and can't imagine why this wasnt on the 03s. The sound system is sub par for a vehicle costing as much as it did.

Overall the 4R is well built, reliable and fun. A lot of thought goes into the design of this vehicle. So many little things that would probably be left out of an american truck like the little compartments in the back and the pillar mirrors.

The best things are the cup holders that actually work, even in the back, the auto up driver window and the steering wheel that doesn't have a six o'clock spoke, god I hate that.

I love my truck.

This post is really informative and well organized and deserving of it! It's a great way to database useful links without having 500 stickies. Please keep adding to the first post - if you get tired of adding stuff or need a hand, I'm happy to do it for you too.

for those that need to replace a light, any light, this is a good fit guide:
Toyota 4runner LED Lights | LED Replacement Bulbs for Cars | 12v | Super Bright LEDs

tells you exactly what type light is replaced with what type of bulb, whether its LED or regular bulbs

I've learned so much already by reading the info and build threads here. Point proven on this post alone. BIG change from the "rice" world I am getting away from. especially from owning a NEON srt4 =)

Cant wait to be home from deployment to pick out and acquire my new toy. Been online trolling sites searching for a new ride and its KILLING ME not being back in the US right now to just go test drive all day long. Currently a fwd pavement loving vehicle owner that is soon to go away. Haven't had a 4wd for well over 10 years (94 dakota 318). Came to the conclusion a few months back that I was getting a 4th gen 4runner. The competition didn't seem worth it or as nice, definitely not as reliable. I am a modder at heart and already have a plan laid out. All i can think about is buying a 4runner! off-road again! So give me another month and i will be joining this great group, from what i've seen peering in from the window.
