I'm going to look at a 2006 V8 Sport tomorrow. I know the main things to look for mechanically. My question is, how do I test the 4WD systems in various modes? Only 4WD vehicles I'm personally familiar with are mid 80s and older Chevy trucks. Thanks for any advice you guys have for me. I'm itching to get into a 4Runner.

The instructions for using the 4WD system is on the back of the driver's sun visor and also in the owner's manual.

Locking Rear Diff Question.....

I have a 4thGen, V8 with the center locking diff. I am attempting to find some info on adding a rear locking diff too. I know I've read in this forum about some people taking the rear locking diff from the FJ and just swapping it. However, the the FJ is a V6.... and I am willing to bet this could cause me a headache.(though not confirmed, I'd be willing to bet the swap was to a V6 4Runner too) I know there are plenty of aftermarket options when it comes to diff lockers, either air or electric, but my intent is to try and see if the FJ swap option is viable for the V8. Anyone have any insights or opinions they'd like to share? I'm all in. Thanks all!

Thank you or putting this together. I'm guessing you know already, but there are several broken links in the original post now. Still though, thank you.

I see many other people asking the same questions I was looking for answers to. Primarily this means mods, and that's why so many links below are to mods. I didn't want to ask a question that had been asked a hundred time so I searched the hell out of the forum, finding and reading tons of info. This isn't all inclusive, just the links I saved while researching and thought it might help others. Feel free to PM me if you have corrections or things I should add.

#1 Read this post or go directly to #2. My info is laid out Info, mods, retail sources.
#2 As on any forum, please use the search feature at the top of the page, or when you are on the main "4th Gen T4Rs" page use the "Search this forum" link just above the first post. The same questions get asked many times and people occasionally get irate about questions that can easily be answered by searching. Chances are someone has experienced your problem or done the mod you are contemplating.
#3 If you have searched and can't find your answer create a post and ask a question, there are a lot of knowledgeable people here.

Basic 4th Gen 4Runner information
4th generation 4Runners include model years 2003-2009. There are 3 basic models, SR5 (base), Sport Edition (has hood scoop) and Limited (more luxury oriented). There was a Urban Runner package available on the 2008-2009 Sport Edition v6. In 2009 a Trail Edition package was available, this was the only 4th ten with a factory locking rear differential. There are 2 engines, v8, it has timing belt that needs to be replaced at regular intervals and a v6 with a timing chain. All 4Runners feature a locking center differential. From what I have seen, silver is by far the most common color. And yes, if you maintain them they should go for over 300 thousand miles.

2005-2009 are equipped with VVT-I (variable valve timing) and have a 5 speed automatic instead of 4 speed. No manual transmissions are available in any 4th gen. The v6 gets around 20 mpg highway, the v8s slightly less. The 5 speed slightly better mileage that the 4 speed. This can go do with Mods of course. The v8 is full time all wheel drive while the v6 is selectable 4 wheel drive.

The X-REAS suspension standard on the Sport and optional on the Limited offers significantly better road handling, however may limit lift options. The X-REAS system links diagonal shocks to limit body roll during cornering.

Side air bags were an option from 2003-2007 and standard in 2008-2009. All years received safety ratings. Tire pressure monitoring was standard in 2004. In 2007 rollover sensor side curtain airbags were added as well as side torso air bags.

Third row seating was available as an option on SR5 and Limited beginning in 2004. From what I have read it is not feasible to add 3rd row seats to a 4Runner that did not come with them.

2006 brought projector headlights and LED tail lights. The tail lights are a direct swap to 03-05 4Runners. The headlights will swap, you will need to buy the pre-painted trim pieces that fit under the projector headlights. There will also be a small gap between the lower corner of the headlight and the grill due to changes made from 05-06. The 06 grill is not a direct swap to earlier year vehicles.

If you are buying a 4th generation 4Runner try to obtain service records from the previous owner. Any maintenance and repairs done at a Toyota dealership can be looked up online, see link in previous post under New and prospective owners. You simply create an account on the website and enter the VIN number for any Toyota. You do not have to be the owner of the vehicle to do this. You can find the VIN on the tailgate, doors, etc, see boondoggle's post below.

You can save a lot on Husky floor liners at Advance Auto using coupon codes, usually 30 or 40%. Liners are expensive, about $115 for the cargo and $75 for each front and rear. This is how to save, find the best coupon deal, often it is at the $100 spend level. In this case make one order for the cargo liner and another order for the from and rear liners. This should save you $60-80. Sometimes adding a small filler item can get you a better discount. This also works well for batteries.

Tuned ECU transferable?

I've done a lot of searching and can't find an answer, so here it goes. I bought my 2006 SR5 2WD V6 from my father in law 3 years ago. He owned the car for ~7 years and told me that he had a performance tune put on the car. I believe him because it drives extremely well and does not feel like a typical SUV. He mentioned that he had to pull out his ECU or board in the ECU and send it off to be tuned. He has passed away and so I can't ask him where or how this was done and I can't find any paperwork.

So, my question is, if I buy another 4th gen (in the market for a 4WD), can I swap the board/ECU to the new(er) vehicle to keep that performance I've come to really enjoy? If not, any ideas on the company he might have dealt with to do this tune? I remember him saying he found the info on one of the 4Runner Forums

You'll most likely be able to do that IF you get another 2WD, if I'm not mistaken the 4WD has a different ECU to control the 4WD system and other features not on a 2WD.

If you do a Google search for "ECU flash 4Runner" a few companies come up. VR Tuned was the first and I've heard good things about them.

Hey all,

I'm looking to purchase my first 4runner. Was originally planning on picking up a 2014-2016 but now I'm thinking about avoiding a loan altogether and picking up a 4th gen. There is a 2005 v8 sport for sale by private owner near me. It has 143,000 miles, JBL speakers, towing package, remote start, sunroof, and both summer and snow tires. New front brakes (calipers, rotors, pads) were installed last year and front sway bar connections were just replaced. The underbody was powerwashed and seal-coated last year, looks clean but that seal-coat covered a lot of it up. The body itself looks very clean, no rust that I can see. Timing belt and water pump were changed at 106k. The only issue with it is that the rear wiper motor is shot. He's asking $5400 for it but will take reasonable offers. I'm thinking of offering $4500 for it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

2wd or 4wd? Sounds like a good deal but I'd be very leery of rust on the frame. You should try to get it up on a lift for a very good look-over if you can.

Its 4wd. I'll definitely try to get it up on a lift. I think that's by biggest concern at this point.

Does anyone have a link to a good list of baseline items. I have a 2008 V8 Limited with 100,000 miles. I've owned it for 9 years and done basic maintenance, but I'd like to spend some time refreshing it for the next 100k. I tried searching but did not find a definitive list of baseline items.

Thanks!
If it’s clean that’s a steal. But I agree definitely do a PPI and have them look for rust. If it’s 4WD make sure to test it out. I was looking at an 04 V8 170K miles 4WD for $9.7K, looked great but once I got it on a lift the underside was had a lot more rust than the photos were able to capture. I passed on it.
