Looking at an '04 SR5 4WD

hey all!

Currently I'm in an 03 Wrangler and hate it, how does anyone fit anything in those?!
So now I'm on the hunt for a T4R and I found an 04 SR5 4WD with 88k miles. It's black, the outside looks good, and the interior looks nice, and that's all I really know. I'll know more tomorrow when I go look at it.

I won't be doing any major hauling aside from maybe dirtbikes and a jetski.
I'd like to use it for beach days, camping, maybe a bit wheeling.
It'll also be my commuter.

Think it'll be a good fit? or should I go for a V8?

Thanks in advance!

If you get a good deal on it don’t pass it up. V8’s are hard to come by especially with low mileage. If that’s all you’re gonna tow, you should be fine. You will be pleasantly surprised with how much you can fit in and on (especially aftermarket roof rack) these rigs. Good luck, happy hunting. Only real advice is make sure the 4x4 works. In all modes. If it’s not exercised regularly they tend to freeze. Also depending where you are at, check the frame for rust, another common issue.

It's a V6, and it looks pretty clean but I wont know about the frame until I'm able to crawl all under it tomorrow.

Do you think I'll miss the V8? I've read a few posts on here stating the pros and cons of each. I'm on Oahu and my commute is about 18 miles one way and traffic can be pretty heavy at times, which is where the small increase to mpg may be to my liking. Also, is 4wd essential, or is that also based on need?

It comes down to your needs really. If you’re gonna take it in the sand on the beach, 4Hi will be nice. The V6 is really peppy, you’ll see what I mean when you drive it. I’m sure the V8 is nice but I’ve never driven one so I don’t know the difference first hand.

Buying Question - First Toyota

Hello All,

I was hoping to pick the brains of the experienced members on this forum about a specific car I am about look at and hopefully purchase if all goes well. I have purchased several used cars so I know the obvious items to look at but are there any specific places to look when it comes to a 2003 Limited 4runner? I have attached the CL link as well. Thank you in advance for any advice/guidance.

What to save?

My 03 v8 trans just blew at 270km, don't want to spend more money on it.

Found a 05 v6 sport with 170km on it.

What parts should I strip from the v8?

Having winter tyres on rims would be nice, are you they interchangeable?

Just had a new exhaust installed, worth saving/selling?

Total car noob so if this is a stupid question just let me know!

2005 V8 Advice?

Hey y’all I’m new to the forum and haven’t owned a car in roughly 8 years... reading everything I can but the wealth of knowledge here is far greater than i can absorb! Love it

Originally looked at 3rd gens but then I found this one. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I would keep looking. The price isn’t bad but sounds like it may have the exhaust tick which needs header replacement and will cost you at least $1000 on the lower end. Another thing to check with the V8’s is the timing belt/water pump service. It needs replacing every 90k miles and I don’t see that listed here. That’s another $800-$1k at least. I’m sure you can find a cleaner one for not all that much more. Good luck.

Hopefully new owner here, great write up, been following it along!

I am currently in talks with a reputable dealer(I have a long history with them and know their management and service team very well) and I am about to purchase a 2006 SR5 V6 4x2 with 158k. Vehicle never left central Florida, looking at service history it has a good maintenance history as well.

I have the service team doing a full service, 4 brand new tires, brake pads, rotors, spark plugs, drive belts, oil and filter and flushing any fluids as needed. The car will be ready tomorrow or Thursday, then I will inspect the car with a fine tooth comb myself.

Initial impressions are very good, it looked cared for and I noticed it has a practically brand new $300+ head unit installed with a backup camera(which works great!). It’s a Kenwood ddx6705s and I’ve been noticing a lot of users here have similar head units to this one, would be nice if the previous owner was a prior member here but that’s a long shot.

I think I’d be making a good purchase here but anyone else think so?

Sounds good but what's the price? My only hesitation if it's a good financial deal is 4x2. I drove a 2WD Xterra for 11 years and I decided I would get 4WD when I sold it and bought my 4R. But that experience taught me that if your vehicle gets you where you want to go and you don't need 4WD to get there, that's fine. Hope it works out for you.

They want 8k OTD. Unfortunately the market is bone dry for 4WD(or people try to sell a beat up 05 with 200k+ for $9000, and that's private party) but that's not a big selling point for me. I have a 2004 RWD Xterra and a 2018 Mustang GT Premium (running E85). So I'm more than fine with just 2WD, its just not really needed in central Florida anyway, and even with 2WD you can have some fun here.
