4th Gen Brake Upgrade Glock_19 by Ducmonsta

First of all, thanks to @Glock_19 for allowing High Tech to perform the brake upgrade to his 4th gen. In this thread, I will outline the overall installation of upgrading your brakes to the larger caliper/rotor system that is available to the Sport/Limited model 4th gens.

A few things to note. The smaller caliper is stamped with a WG. The larger caliper you'll need is stamped WH. Ironically, the Tundra brake system that is popular with the 3rd gens use the same pads. So, essentially, we are performing the Tundra brake upgrade to the 4th gen. I will show the differences between the larger 4th gen caliper vs. the Tundra caliper (stamped WL) a little later.

First we start with the beginning. Here I've mounted the the rotors back to back on the pass side to show the size difference between the rotors.

Here we've mounted the caliper with the factory rotor still attached. you can see where the piston is clearly showing the size difference.

Here are a few photos that show the difference between the rotors (off the vehicle).

If you're familiar with the 3rd gen upgrade, you have to modify the backing plate. You'll have to do the same thing in the 4th gen.

Here is a photo of what the backing plate looks like before trimming (driver's side)

and after (pass side, before clean up and paint)

After trimming the backing plate and painting, this is what you'll end up with.

Somewhat of the finished product.

Glock_19 also had us install Hawk performance pads on the rear. There's really no need to show you guys that part of the install. We also installed Goodrich's stainless brake lines and flushed the entire brake system with DOT4 fluid.

So after all this, here are some facts.

Small calipers will be stamped WG.
Larger calipers will be stamped WH.
Tundra calipers are stamped WL (for the 3rd gen upgrade).

The pads for the WH and WL calipers are identical.

Here's the difference between those two calipers.
4th Gen Brake Upgrade Glock_19 by Ducmonsta-tusing-011-jpg

The caliper on the left (WH) has mounting points farther away than the (WL) caliper. This is the only difference between the two. The pistons are the same, the pad area is the same, which makes the pads identical.

So for those of you that want to upgrade, it's as easy as getting the WH calipers and pads. And a little trimming of course. Oh, and you better have at least the 17" factory wheel. Whew...almost forgot that one.

Rotors are from EBC. They are the sport rotors. Calipers can be had at any local auto parts store. We opted to go with the OEM ones. If anything leaves our shop with our stamp of approval, it has to have quality components. I always recommend oe vs. aftermarket.

Great writeup! Just the details I needed to push me forward on doing the upgrade. Few questions if you don't mind.

1) Does this mod including replacing just the front brakes or rear too?

2) Did the customer supply their own parts or did they go through High Tech and was their a core charge refund on the return of old rotors if there was a return?

3) Is High Tech offering to do this for more customers if there's enough interest? If so, how much for parts and labor?

Thanks in advance!

This is a front brake upgrade only. We just happened to be doing his rear brakes also.

He supplied the pads and brake lines. The brake lines were cheaper through Tire Rack. I couldn't price match for him. But he gave me the opportunity to try.

High Tech will always do this mod. It's not very difficult to accomplish.

PM me for pricing.

I just got the truck back tonight and I can tell you High Tech did an awesome job. I'm very pleased with the results and everyone at the shop was a pleasure to deal with. I can easily say I'll be going to High Tech in the future.

I supplied the stainless steel brake lines and the pads because I knew exactly what I wanted. However, High Tech is able to provide what you need (except maybe the stainless lines, you would have to check on that).

I'll let Duc handle the specifics of his pricing and such.

Do the sport/limited/tundra calipers not have seizing issues that the SR5 do?

@Glock_19

Did you have seized/frozen calipers before this upgrade? And is their a noticeable difference in braking distance or pedal feel/travel after getting your truck back?

I did not have seized calipers but the pads and rotors needed changed so I decided to go all the way.

As far as pedal feel it hasn't really changed under normal braking conditions. It still has some travel to it. You really feel a difference under heavy braking though. Before the pedal would travel and then kind of "squish" down further. Now I have some travel but as the brakes grab the pedal feels firm.
