I'm in the process of getting a 4runner hopefully i'll get it. It might be a month or so before i actually get it. It's gonna be my first vehicle so of course i'm excited about it and i'm ready to fix it up. I was just curious of what tires you guys think would be good for me. I want an all terrain tire, but i'll mostly be on pavement, not off road. I was looking into BFG KO's and Duratracs but i'm not sure if i wanna pay so much for tires. I also considered Nitto Terra Grapplers, but i'd like to know y'alls opinions on these and if you have any others you'd like to suggest, that'd be great!

Cooper Discoverer STT is also a good choice. Discounttiredirect.com has them fairly cheap.

I'm a big fan of The Yokohama Geolandar AT/S. they've performed reliably for me in all conditions. I have 65k miles on my current set with good tread left (just passed inspection easily). They wear well, look aggressive, and are pretty quiet and IMO there's no beating their value as a mostly on road tire. They have held up fine to light offroading and beach driving when aired down.

I will be replacing with Duratrac 33s this summer but only because I anticipate spending more time offroad. Otherwise I wouldn't think twice about getting another set.

not trying to thread jack, but i figured it would help the OP since were in the same boat.. im looking at a few more inexpensive brands and want to know what you guys think of the quality.. im looking for a balance of long tread life, low road noise, mpg, and good off road performance.

hankook dynapro atm
hercules alltrac at
.. so im kinda leanin toward them.. unless theyre crap.. as i said, this should help the OP as well as me and others..

The #1 AT tire on the market right now is the Cooper Discoverer AT3. And it just so happens that this tire is made in the USA so you're supporting OUR economy, AND it's much cheaper for a set than the BFG or Goodyears.

I will definitely be running them when my stock tires are worn out.

haha, really? I'm all for supporting the US economy but the cooper AT3 is not the best tire out right now. Have another sip of that drink Mr. Confidence.
Out of that list dynapro or nitto tg would be your best options , if you don't want to splurge on Duratracs or BFGs. I've never heard of hercules, it doesn't mean their not a reputable company, but you want a reputable company when the only thing holding you to the asphalt, mud, snow or whatever is your tires. That's my .02cents.

I put Nitto TGs on my 4runner a little over a month ago and have used them on my other truck as well. Tirebuyer gave me a solid price and I had them mounted &balanced locally for 72 bucks...looks like P265/70r17s are going for about $145 apiece now

Great all around tire, I've run them on rocks, dirt, mud and snow- and a lot of highway miles. These were quieter than stock (but the stocks were 5 years old). I have LTs on my truck, they do have a firmer ride.

Actually, it is. And not just because Consumer Reports has it rated #1. It's #1 because it really is the best AT on the market.

Name an AT tire and I've run it. All of them. There are lots of great choices. But the Cooper is the best for somebody who's 95% pavement in varying weather and 5% offroad fun.

I'm looking for tires now. I'm torn between the Hankook Dynapros and the Falken Wild Peak. Size 265/65r18.

The Hankooks are great. I really liked them. More road noise than I expected, but not bad at all. Great in most conditions I encounter (rain, snow, heat, cold, gravel roads, etc.) I liked that they had a rim protection flange. I also liked the solid white lettering. They looked good and worked great.

The Falkens suck. They picked up rocks worse than any tire I've ever used. Then those rocks get thrown all over your rocker panels when you hit the pavement again. They also had miserable traction in wet offroad conditions. When new, the rubber compound literally gave off an odor similar to cow feces. They also had a tendency to track all over the lane and felt "squirrely" until they wore down some. And finally, they are VERY HEAVY and my gas mileage took a nose dive with them. They did have thick sidewalls which would be a plus for guys who live around rocky environments. But I personally will never run them again. They are made by Sumitomo, and there is a reason why the Sumitomo AT was discontinued.

The Goodyear Duratracs were great. Very quiet for the first 5,000 miles. Then I cross-rotated them for the first time and they got noticeably louder. They still were not quite as loud as a full MT tire. I enjoyed them a lot. On wet pavement they did not excel. However, in mud and deep snow they were excellent. The sidewalls were weak and the price is ridiculous for what you get. However, overall they were good tires and I would run them again if they weren't priced so high.

There are dozens of other good choices I've run on my 4x4s but the Cooper AT3 is currently the reigning champion and I will run those forevermore unless somebody releases a tire that works better in all conditions, which hasn't happened yet.

I run Michelin AT/2 on my 07 Tundra, and they are great but you pay for it.
60,000 warranty, lighter P rating tire then the Coopers.

Just an alternative: The 4 runner has the Michelin MS/2 which is prilific in the longevity department with a 70,000 mile ratting. My dads truck has 103,000 miles on the older MS with 3/4 tread left then when new still the same. I think rubber hardens and does not wear down any more on those tires.

Thanks for the info. I've heard the loose feeling about the Falkens before. I work for a dealership and we've had great results with Hankooks fo I'll give those a shot. I'm needing to watch what I spend right and I can get a good deal on the Dynapros, plus I'm wanting white letters and the Dynapros look great.
