Intake, exhaust any help for 4.0?
Ok I have searched, every thread seems to turn into flame war and personal attacks. I am not looking to drag race, just looking for an additional 20HP or so, a little more pep for towing, passing, and a little better MPG. If this cannot be achieved I am fine with that and better money spent elsewhere. I was just making sure $650 for intake and Cat Back would not be a waste.
Thanks

The Tacoma guys seem to like shorty headers for low rpm gains.

I am a firm beliver in URDs T.C.A.I and MAF cal combo. The cost in the end is right around that 650 mark u have. After installing both these products I have had a significant power AND mpg gains. This is very dependent on how I drive. Keeping my rpms low and using cruise control at 65mph I can muster about 23 mpgs( hand calcd) with a 4 inch lift and 32s. When I am romping, towing, wheeling or just passing someone I can feel a huge difference. URD claims 15 HP on stock rigs so in combination with their intake I imagine I picked up around 20. I am saving my cash for DT long tube headers, URD y pipe and a borla kit for the rest. If your going to spend money on your exhaust buy the best don't skimp your self. As far as the intake URDs is the best one out there hands down. Go check it out and if you want any pics of my setup lemme know. I'm loving it thru and thru.

For CAI, I had made the mistake in ordering from K&N. Save yourself a few bucks, and get the drop in K&N filter, as the "Cold" Air intake will be gaining more, but warmer air. Now, if you went TRD or aFe, you'd have the fully enclosed filter.
For towing, however, you'll be wanting more torque than power. A nice exhaust will do that. Honestly, though, you could do that with some nice headers with high-flow, if any, cats.

Performance-wise, long-tubes typically do better. (This, however will take away some ground clearance, and increase under hood temperature.)
A better muffler can allow for better-flowing exhaust gases, as well as a mean sound when you get on the gas. I personally would say go with magnaflow, although I'd have to leave that choice to you. And, to increase this a bit (you probably won't even notice it, though), a lot of people on the forum do the resonator delete, which will help with the horrendous smell with the back window down, if the exhaust is either a. dumped, or b. routed out the side.
(And if you want, there are a few people who have actually gotten the TRD supercharger working with the 4.0 v6. Just a heads up ;) )

Not to start pissing match , but if you search this out it this has been up & down the road many times .AFEdry filter, Headers yes , find a muffler you like drone gets old , I did do urd y-pipe so far so good (kiss o death) popped a p0420 so far just replaced gas cap , fingers crossed have o2 on standby, not an expert by any means but all old timers say we have CAI already makes more noise than anything their opinion not mine . Check out skylinetracer his mods are where its at !! I did what they said invest in suspension !!

I agree with them on this, although the enclosed CAI's have take air from the same place as the OEM intake, but have a higher flow filter. It's not too notable of a change, so I'd say it's not really worth it, but that's my opinion. It does, however, have some affect, and a few people, such as Gaterose, have one of them, and as far as I know, he likes it.

Great info. With my G8 I have to custom tune with headers, no cats or aftermarket cats. Is the 4 runner the same?

No 4r has total 4, 2 fore & after cats or 2 on the manifold & so on .So far only seen 2 headers jba or Doug Thorley or magnafloe & pacestter make some sorta oem replacements , both the true headers come in shorty or long tube , depending on your st smog laws won't pass visual ! Nv only has ecu plug & send . That's all I got ! If you want horsepower I STRONGLY suggest skylinetracer build he does it !!

I currently have on my 4r... AFE intake and full exhaust. Gas mileage I can't tell the difference but as far as get up and go it's there. Not as much as one would hope though. Going to buy the URD MAF CAL to see what happens once that's on. Honestly I think all the parts I put on will only work better if i tune it.

Keep in mind this engine was designed primarily for low end torque. Any gains you might find in the HP department are going to be found way up in the power band i.e. not usable in almost any day-to-day use. The stock intake is already a CAI, maybe throw a high-flow filter in for peace of mind but just know that the difference in the volume of air you can flow through an aftermarket intake over stock is very small and only noticeable at the very top of usable revs. Aside from a SC kit this is not really a 'tuner' engine and any gains you can eke out are going to be small, expensive and not very usable. Honestly, your money is much better spent elsewhere.

You are absolutely correct. I could notice a difference after my intake but not until the MAF cal did I feel what it really had. If you wanna get really tuned out. Look into afr wideband tuners.
