Test drove this 4Runner today

OK, so I test drove this today.

2006 Toyota 4RUNNER

It's pretty clean. Husband is a Toyota mechanic, they did the timing belt at 87k miles, and he has done all the work. They are second owners. It has been in my area since bought, so no rust or salt problems from the north. Mileage is 96,000.

I did not know it was all time 4wd. How do you all like that?

The V8 sounded nice.

We negotiated 15k. KBB is 14,800 excellent condition. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, just wanted to see what all of you thought.

I hate the AWD. I would much rather have the t-case that comes with the V6 to reduce wear and tear on the front end, and to save 0.5 MPG.

But that looks like a really sharp 4Runner. Appears to be well cared for from looking at the pic.

Love the full-time 4wd. It's a simpler setup that barely affects mpg. It also makes exercising the diff lock and low range actuators easier, which is nice since time has shown this needs to be done.

As for extra wear and tear, there is none to speak of overall. The drive forces are simply spread around more evenly.

There is no evidence that the Full-Time 4WD (Not to be confused with AWD) promotes wear & tear any earlier than the Part-Time System employed by the V6. In fact the transfer cases are entirely identical, save for a different shift rod and lack of a shift fork to engage the 2WD on the V8 models.

The All-Time 4WD functions exactly the same as the V6 Part-Time 4WD in 4Hi mode and does not affect performance, durability, and reliability; though there is a negligible loss of MPG... but, if you're honestly pickin' the fly from the crap with that then you honestly bought the wrong vehicle. (I'm not trying to insult you, its just my opinion that you don't buy a full framed, body on frame, 4WD SUV like these for fuel savings, you buy them for the capability and comfort that most manufactuers cannot provide in their vehicles for an afforable cost.)

Its a great looking 4Runner and I think you'll enjoy it very much (not a fan of white personally, but still looks wonderful) and I love the Full-Time 4WD system on my V8 and have no real complaints about it.

I love the full time 4WD but there is a major drawback to it. If you're off road, or anywhere really, and you snap a CV joint, you're screwed. You're not going anywhere because you can't just put it in two wheel drive and make it home. Other than that, I love it.

The front drive shaft would need to be removed, but it's not like it would strand you.

It stranded me. I was in the middle of the woods, an hour away from the closest road and I couldn't move at all. Luckily I was with a 4Runner group and @Tresvn pulled me all the way back to the road.

OK, pulled the trigger. Just too good of a deal, especially since they just did the timing belt change.

Can't wait to start modding it. This will be my second 4Runner. I'm really going to miss my DC Tacoma, though.
