Unhappy Parking brake noise issue

In the process of replacing pads/rotors on the left rear brake assembly of my 2005 V8 4WD 4Runner I bent one of the shoe hold down spring pins. I'm new to drum brakes and didn't release the parking brake tension properly.

Replaced the pin, and everything seemed to go back together properly in the drum system. The only thing that I forgot to do was properly re-adjust the parking brake. I had the adjuster tightened almost all the way in when I installed everything back together and that's how I left it.

Now, I've notice a cyclic noise that increases in cadence with wheel speed. It seems to appear whenever I make a right turn and for a short while when I first drive the car after it's been sitting. To me it seems like the brake shoe towards the rear of the car has to be hitting the rotor to make the noise.

Could a loose parking brake adjustment cause that or could something else have not gone back together properly in the parking brake assembly?

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

You may have fixed this already, but I had the same issue. Replaced all my brakes and front calipers then a week later this squealing noise commensurate to the speed of the car. Found out it was a broken parking brake spring.

The spring kit is $30 but you have to pull the back axles out to fix it. About 3hrs. to fix by the shop.

autoxr37 did you fix the noise? I am having a similar problem now. I had problems trying to remove the rear rotors (they would not come out freely) to do the rear brakes. I had to reassemble parts of the parking brake system. I think I assembled everything correctly but know I have a clicking noise because on of the two Shoe Hold-down spring pin and cup are rubbing on rotation. Any suggestions?

Way late bump but I have this same issue except mine squeasl on right turns only for a little bit after I first drive (having parking brake on while parked).

I just replaced the parking brake shoes last week but this didn't start until the other day. I'm wondering if any hardware broke in the meanwhile (I didn't replace all of it) or this is just the shoes wearing in.

I had to set the star wheels + cable tension pretty tight to get any stopping power. I'm gonna tear it down this weekend again to see what if anything got messed up since.

I'm going to Canada next weekend so I wanna make sure everything is 100% before I have them jam up or something.

Turns out it was both a bent pin and a bent spring:

(rear pins)
Top pin is the new/good pin. Notice how both ends are on the same axis. This ensures that the rear shoe sits straight.

(lower spring that goes next to starwheel)
Both of these springs are stretched/bent but the top one is in better shape. The good one I already installed before taking the pic, but the two end hooks should be about even.

I swapped out these and re-greased the areas that require it and the squealing went away

No you don't. It's a bear to do without pulling the axles, but it is possible. Just be ready to scream and curse.

x2, no axle removal required. Just a little patience and understanding of how it all goes together.

Remember to clip/remove them before assembling the rest of the hardware. Also, do NOT waste your money on a hardware kit from AutoZone. Very inferior parts such as the star wheel adjuster being shorter and c-clips being flimsy. I ended up re-using most of the stock stuff instead.

This has to do with 4th gens with rear drum brakes? I have disk brakes... but have an annoying squeal issue that can be parking brake related. Does this not affect me?

do you have a link to those parts you replaced @DG&BRM ?

The 4th gens have disc brakes too. It's only the parking brake that is drum-style.

No, this is the parking brake on a 4th gen that has rear disc brakes. The parking brake is a mini drum brake inside the tophat of the rear rotor.

This thread helps explain servicing the rear disc brakes: 4th Gen 4Runner Rear Brake Rotor and Pad DIY
This thread helps explain servicing the parking brake (which is contained inside the rear disc rotor): Parking Brake Repair Procedure Question
Here is a youtube DIY video of a similar set-up on a Toyota car (our 4runners are slightly different but it gives you a good idea of what I'm talking about):

You can get the shoes & hardware at the dealer or any auto parts store. I got my parts at AutoZone. They sell a hardware kit for $20 that includes everything you need.

Here are the shoes: Parking Brake Shoe - Duralast (850)

Here is the hardware kit: Duralast/Parking Brake Hardware Kit 17395 at AutoZone.com

^ Double check on their site that those are the correct parts for your year.

That you so much for that link so helpful! I'm going to take apart this weekend myself to inspect. hopefully it might just need a little grease first, or maybe they forgot something simple.

im going to use brake clean and apply my own grease. which grease would you suggest?

if this does not work ill go parking brake. i loosen my parking brake all the way, would this eliminate parking brake as an issue? or could thing still squeak?

Sorry just seeing this now - I was in Canada all weekend.

That hardware kit comes with a little packet of grease that looks like toaster strudel icing lol but I always use some high temp anti-seize since I have a ton of it and it's great for a million other things such as spark plug threads:

If it's still squeaking I recommend replacing the parking brake shoes & hardware. Loosening the parking brake all the way may not solve the squeak since it can be deformed or broken hardware that is causing it.
Also, if it is broken hardware - you want to take care of it ASAP since if it breaks off it can jam up your brakes/leave you sitting.

Thanks!

So turns out it might just been a little grease that is needed on the brake pads.

local mechanic used wagner semi metalic brake pads, amazon reviews mensioned it was squeaky... After taking out the pads I saw the guy did not clean anything with brake clean or grease up the pads. nor did he put an anti squeal shim.

for now I just used some autozone brake grease. I put back the tire and what do you know, one side doesn't squeak anymore! I didn't have to touch the parking brake.

Though when i put back the wheel i broke the lug nut stud =[. Was so pissed I didnt get a chance to do the other side.

I have to go back in there and fix the lug nut stud, when im back there Ill replace with OEM brake pad, high temperture brake grease, new guide pins and new rubber boots. (For piece of mind) with some goodie silicone grease for the guide pins.

The parking brake still needs adjusting because because it doesn't hold the car in neutral. So ill still keep this thread updated

life lesson here, is if you get someone else to do it demand oem and know what needs to be done and tell them the order you want it done. (clips shims grease etc) if they dont take your business else where.

there still might be an issue with the parking brake, but I'd thought I share this in case anyone else is reading.

EDIT: I bought that bottle of anti seize at auto zone, I should use that or get the cooper one for a couple of dollars more? Its a daily driver car so i dont think it will make a difference.

I did it by squeezing the spring with a pair of vise grips and then tying it up with dental floss. I then tied the piece that goes on the spring with another piece of dental floss.

I thought I was going to go insane. It took the two of us a day and a half to replace the parking brake cable and get everything back together again.
