I was changing my oil this weekend and noticed that my inner CV boots have ripped clean around the outer clamps and grease and muck are on the frame/control arms. Its been 150k miles of New Jersey winters/salt so I guess its time. The dealer will want a gazillion dollars to replace both CV axles, so I am probably in for doing this one myself. I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens as I've never done something like this before. I am trying to get everything together and want some input from anyone with experience doing this on their truck.
My first question is, can anyone recommend where to get the replacement CV axles. I've heard mixed reviews on the reliability of ones from autozone/pepboys. Napa has rebuilds for ~$60 or new ones for ~$100... are these better than what I would get a autozone or pepboys? Toyota parts are ~$350 each, so not an economic option.
I will also purchase the gear oil seals for both sides (from the dealer) and replace these as well (is this recommended when replacing the CV axles?). Do I just pry out the old ones and press in the new ones? any advice on this?
I will drain the front diff before I begin and have 2 quarts of gear oil on hand to refill.
Also, I've read that I will need a slide hammer to pull the axles. Any suggestions on where to get one?
Finally, if I chicken out on this, or can't get it done on my own, what should I expect to pay an independent shop to do the work (I will have all of the parts for them to use already).
