Just replaced the Tensioner ASSEMBLY Friday. I replaced the idler pulley about 15,000miles ago. Just do the whole assembly. I was having a really gnarly chatter and belt chirp, and finally tracked it down to the assembly that wasn't exerting tension smoothly.
One tip: if, when you use your ratchet or bar to release tension on the serpentine belt, the assembly creaks AT ALL, or isn't totally smooth, replace the whole shebang.
I did it in 4 hours, including setting up an ice bucket with a fan (garage was 105 degrees) as a swamp cooler, working on my computer for some torque specs, talking with the girlfriend when she called (too often), etc. it's not fun but man is the engine better now. it even idles smoother.

Idler Pulley
Are both the idler pulley and tensioner pulley left handed threads? Thanks.

I just checked my 07 4Runner 4.0 V6 and I count 3 idler pulleys + tensioner pulley. The parts you listed are the 3 idler pulleys? Or is one of them the tensioner pulley? Thanks.

I used the Napa pulleys since they are sealed and I’ve heard they hold up better in water.

The V8 uses:
1 idler pulley: Dayco 89154; Toyota 16604-50030
1 Tensioner/pulley: Dayco 89255; Toyota 16620-0W101 (reverse thread pulley bolt )

belt tensioner pulley
Anyone know the part number for the tensioner pulley only? I can find the whole tensioner unit, but I only need the pulley. 4.0 V6

Thanks for the detailed write up.
My truck developed a loud chatter recently, which goes away when warm, which am sure is from the idler pulleys or tensioner.
Any danger of the belt grenading if the issue isnt tackled asap?..
From this post, i see its only the tensioner that is reverse thread.please confirm this.
How easy was it to break the bolt holding the idler rollers. You know the factory torque specs?
Am short of time and have a 250mile trip lined up

I have the V8 and it was my tensioner bearing that went out on me, it was a bit noisy but didn't brother me too much...until when leaving for work one morning it completely froze up and the belt slipping on the pulley was deafening, I had to take off work to fix it that day, the belt was toast but didn't break by the time I went to a parts store a total of about 15 miles and back home to fix it.

I can't say for the V6 if that's the correct pulley or not, I don't have the V6 engine, BUT I would highly suggest you get a tape measure and try and get a measurement of the pulleys on your engine, the reason I say this is because I have the V8 and for the 2004 year model the V8 came with different size pulleys depending on when it was manufactured, later 2004 V8s had a smaller pulley than the earlier 2004 V8s.

Check Rockauto to confirm your part #s. Usually a little cheaper than Amazon too after the 5% discount code found everywhere. FYI, you might save a few bucks with Dayco but odds are that it won't last you even half as long as a Gates. All the gates pullies and tensioners I've seen were made in Canada by OEM maker Litens and used the OEM NTN bearings. Even the older US made Daycos I've seen used cheap Chinese bearings
