So I drove through a 6-8inch puddle like I normally would and you guys can probably assume the rest. So now im looking at used engines and i was wondering to those of you if any that have gotten engines put in how mush should I expect to be paying?

You 100% it hydro locked and some shop isn't trying to take you for a ride?

Figure $4-6k for used block installed.

I did the exact same thing. Normal puddle on the side of the road, drove through it and water sprayed up into my intake. Got about a gallon straight into the intake and shot a rod out the side of the block.

As for repairs, mine was covered under comprehensive insurance, but I believe the bill for a used motor with 45,000 miles installed with all new components (water pump, spark plugs etc) was $4500 from a local shop. If you do the work yourself, expect to pay around $2000 for a good engine and then add a few hundred for new parts. Another tip is to be very careful when buying an engine, as there are a few different 1GR'S that are very similar. I got the wrong engine three times and it took the Toyota dealer over a month to figure that out.

Good luck, I know how much this sucks, such a harmless puddle that can do so much damage

Can someone explain how a "puddle" on the side of the road is taking out one of the most capable off road vehicles left and right....? I call shenanigans on something - either the size of said "puddles", or them hydrolocking the engines or something... Don't our intakes have a bypass valve of some sort at least too?

Think of all the off road videos and clips of dudes going through much more then "puddles":

Point being - don't make me scared to drive my Runner like it was meant to be driven - with ease none the less.

(At least I don't want this to be true!)

The intake is right above the passenger wheel well so if the splash is too large in the water goes

Could the WOT be the determining factor?

The issue isn't the trucks. Toyota did a greatjob of installing intake that makes it very hard for this to happen.

First day I was 16, Dad took me to DMV. It was storming...had to drive through a large puddle.

Wanna know what my genius father said? Go slow. Driving fast will create a high pressure wave that can force itself into the engine.

Seems like some folks missed this one. Offroad doesn't mean its a submarine.
