18" limited wheels vs 17" FJ cruiser wheels, opinions and pictures welcome!

I for some reason love the look of the 18" limited wheels and the 17" FJ cruiser wheels on the 4th gens and was wondering what y'all thought? Also i have a silver 2003 limited and was debating on getting a set then powder coating them black or maybe keeping them original once i get my 285s. I wanted to hear yalls feedback and opinions, also pictures are welcome.

I love the 8-hole fj/trail wheels on my silver 4th gen. So my vote goes there all day long! Also, the backspacing pushes the wheels out of the wheel wells a touch without having to run spacers...

I originally had the Limited rims and love how they look but wanted a little more side wall when going +1 on the tires

I couldn't find used FJ rims, but got 4Runner Trail Edition rims instead.

ive never been a fan of BIG wheels. just large enough to clear the brakes was fine.
then I got my 06 limited. I have no complaints, and I doubt I would change, just because of the size.

then I went for a drive in the snow last weekend. ended up following a little back road...what turned out to be some little trail, that just ENDED, with no good place to turn around.

in my attempt to turn around, I slid off the road, and VERY close to a couple trees. had I slid any further, the side of the runner would have been toast, and we would have been royally screwed, stuck between 2 trees and unable to go anywhere. it would have been a very bad day. as it was, it was sketchy...we were in a pretty bad spot.

what does this have to do with wheels you ask?

in order to get out of that predicament, all I had were a couple 15' ratchet straps. I pulled the straps apart, and laced them through the wheel, and around the tire to try and get some traction on the compact snow/ice. the large wheels allowed me to easily reach my hands through to thread the straps, and also gave enough room so as to not cut or snag the straps on the first tire revolution.

it took a few attempts after the straps were on, but I was able to back out/UP onto the road, and pull forward and back to safety. the straps, and 4runner came out undamaged.

so, after that incident, im loving the larger wheels, and will always keep several straps in the back. also, I will over ever buy the longest ones I can get, and just deal with the EXTRA unused portion.

sorry that was so long...

I love the look of the 18's but not many tire options. That being said I would trade them for trail rims any day

Wow...

Ive got to sat the 8-hole wheels have really started to grow on me. I have also begun looking for tires and did notice the limitations of tire choices. I think i will go with the Fj/trail edition route! Thank you guys so much for the replies and all the help!

Im not voting one way or the other i think it all depends on what you want on your 4runner. I have the limited wheels on mine because thats what it came with and in my opinion their the nicest looking wheel that came on the 4th Gens . Im sure down the road i will go aftermarket and probably go down to a 17" wheel, more tire choices/sizes+more rubber/sidewall i think better for off road

Anyways here's a couple pics of my limited wheels that i plasti dipped and some new tires

sorry their a little dirty

Yeah they are bizarre but I found them on CL in like new condition with Falkens complete down to the lug nuts for $750 and surprisingly they ride nice. No problems like I had with a set of Helo 20" rims with Toyos. I even do some "very light" off roading with them. For the price, they are good.

Why would you waste $750 to put those on a 4wd?? I thought the big wheel phase was over with...guess not.
