Buying 100,000mi + 4th Gen 4Runner?
Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and plan to trade in my 2013 F150 and buy a 2004-2006 4Runner. From what I can tell, a majority of them have over 100,000 miles. I don't mind high miles, but wanted to know if there is anything I should be on the lookout for? Is one year better than the other? I've been searching the forum, but can't seem to pull up relevant info.
I don't care if it has 2WD. Don't really need the V8 either.. Don't tow too much. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Do your normal checking out like any other vehicle you would buy.
03-04 probable head gasket problem. 06+, new designed gasket.
v-8's timing chain, water pump replace at 100K miles
08 and newer added controllers switches added on the vsc,
05+ no more trans stick to check fluid. I think they went to 5 speed auto trans also.
Just a couple of things that come to me.

Thank you both for the info! Just curious - Is there a big benefit going to the 5-speed vs the 4-speed? I'd imagine the 5-speed gets a little better mpg, but is there anything else?

I don't think so. Overdrive is the same if I recall. But you get a substantially lower first gear with the 5-speed. I have a 2003 v6 (4-speed) and wish I had the 5-speed for a lower first for off road. But unless you are towing or off roading, practically there may not be much of a difference.

I just purchased an 04 V8 4x4 this past week. It had 94,000 on it. I purchased the $50 Autocheck subscription prior to purchasing and researched a bunch. My criterial was under 100k, ALL service records available and a clean Autocheck. And, a fair price of course. I did end up driving about 100 miles to go get it.

Having just searched for a 4th gen T4R myself, I found condition to be as important as mileage; and prices for good ones were correspondingly high (even with higher miles). Most of the runners in the lower price range had some degree of underside rust, body damage, questionable history, mechanical needs, etc. (examples, several 07s which needed tires and other things, two 05 V8s which needed the timing service, and several others which had been smoked in or other interior flaws).
Unfortunately I paid MORE for an 08 4runner recently than I paid for my 09 F150 crew cab two years ago with half the miles, same condition. 4runners are high! I do like the quality though.

I just bought a 2003 v8 4wd Limited with 144,000 miles for 10k. I am absolutely loving the truck. Although I haven't driven a v6, I can say that the v8 is amazing. The torque will pull you up any hill with ease. It gets up and goes better than my 06 Chevy with a 300 hp 5.3L and 4.56 gears. The engine is super smooth too. I have always hated the 4 speed transmission in the Chevy, so the 5 speed that comes with the v8 Runner is a welcome feature. If you can't tell, I would highly recommend the v8, even if you don't tow.
From what I have gathered reading countless threads, the v8's can have issues with exhaust manifold leaks and the main concern with the v6 is the head gaskets. Happy hunting!

We have two 2003 V8s and a 2004 V6. We got them with 100k, 125k and 145k. All three are 4wd. We haven't had any engine or tranny issues. We have had two transfer case o-ring leaks. Luckily White Shepherd seems to have fixed them, keep those fingers crossed. We have had a CV Boot to fix and lower ball joint. We have also changed out a few window seals, two rear window seals and one front passenger seals. We have also had some phantom lights come on the dash from the vsc and lo 4wd. Both were cleared by disconnecting the battery. One kept coming back. Changed out the battery and no new issues. Other than than that just basic maintenance issues. These are very solid trucks. I would buy another in a heartbeat. Mileage difference between the V8s and the V6 is almost negligible. Both engines are pretty peppy. I would opt for a V8, all things being equal. LIghts for the AC controls and the center dash tend to go out over time, easy diy fix. The base radios aren't to good, an inexpensive fix is using a Scion 1808, 1809 or T1819. We have a couple of the 1808, got them for around $30, add a $10 ipod cord and all is good, much better sound without changing out the speakers. We paid $10200 for the 2003 V8 three years ago, $9200 for the 2003 V6 18 months ago and just picked up another 2003 V8 for $4500, I spent another $1000 doing a repaint, probably could have lived with it but it now looks like brand new, maybe better, I changed out the hood for a sports edition model with the scoop, also put on some FJ Cruiser wheels. Nobody seems to notice but me. Good luck, we have all So Cal trucks, no rust, just some issues from dry heat......Phil

I would have liked to pay less for it off course, but I am happy with it even at that price. 4wd 4Runners are scarce and go for a bit more here than on the East coast.

prorider17, congrats on making a great decision to purchase a used 4th gen. I've bought two v6's in the past 15 months. a 2007 limited with 67500 for the wife and a 2005 sport with 113500 miles for me... zero issues with either to date. I'm sure if you do your homework that you'll find a winner.

I think you did fine, auction data shows similar 4runners (03 Limited 4x4 V8 125-150k) trading around $8500-9000. Again that is at auction so $10k retail is fine.

Maintenance is KEY. How well it's been maintained for the past 100k miles is what's going to determine how well it'll last the next 100k or 200k miles. I don't care how well an engine is designed or manufactured....if it's NOT maintained well, it won't be a long lasting vehicle. If I was looking for a 05 4runner and I came across one with 250k miles (as mine has now) and I know that it was maintained as well as I maintain mine...I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. Mine is in EXCELLENT shape and I expect another at least another 100k or even 200k miles out of it. The problem with buying a vehicle with that many miles is actually knowing it's maintenance record.
